Just to throw a spanner in the drugs or booze being the problem debate.

I think a significant part of the issue is how cheap "stuff" is now. By stuff I mean things like tents, camping chairs, sleeping bags etc which are essentially disposable now.

I started going to Reading in 1994 and there was always a bit of rumpus on the Sunday with the portaloos getting pushed over (memorably one year someone's car was covered in the contents of one :P ) but there wasn't the whole scale buring of stuff and theft for burning and destruction was almost unheard of.

When you used to pack up on the Monday morning everyone took their tents with them and didn't just abandon everything and leave. So I partly blame the feeling that the camping equipment is viewed as disposable so who cares if it gets wrecked. There is also the mob culture, in that everyone else is doing it so I'm going to join in.

Not been since the bridge appeared has this had any effect on the relative safety of the White campsite or has the nonsense spread "accross the river" now?

I think the no campfires before 8pm could help if they really clamp down - the 'starting' of the riots sort of slowly builds momentum between 8pm and 11pm when everyone is back from the headliners. If they can put off the early ****s then it might stop it all kicking off - albeit rain is obviously the biggest deterant.

The real problem though is quite simply Reading now has a stigma. Alot of people who go just see the Sunday as the night you turn into animals and burn / smash shit. Like it's part of what they paid for on their ticket, and it's very hard for any organiser to take measures against that sort of thing.
