Car route from Midlands

I've often accepted lifts to Glastonbury, but this year I'm driving myself for the first time.

TOS says:

* From the Midlands: Preferably M40 and A34 to A303 and A37.

* From the North West: M6, M5 to A39 (Junction 23) then A361.

Most of the lorry/van drivers i know who travel to Coventry on an evening use the A46 to cut across from the M5 to Jn15 (Warwick) on the M40. They do say that there is not much difference in the journey time than the M5 M42 route. Just dont go A34, its a fair bit out of the way.

M40 and A34 will probably be ok, they are good roads, A303 is a bit of trouble because it isnt dual carriageway all the way, I have read before on these boards of people getting stuck on the A303, however as with most things it really depends what time you are travelling.

I come from Tamworth in Staffordshire and have used the M5/A39/A361 route for the last 10 years or so and have never really had a problem. The first proper queues hit are usually on the very last leg (A361) i.e. the road leading on to site.

We always camp Pennards way and this brings you in from the West so the correct side for West parking.

We do however set off pretty early and aim to arrive around 8-9am on the Wednesday morning. Luckily last year we aimed for 8am and were close to site when the traffic chaos hit.

For this route the average from leaving the house to getting onto the car parks with boot open is around 4 hours, including a 30 minute breakfast stop at the services.

Never tried the recommended route as it didn't seem to make much sense (as you are finding) so can't comment.

To get to the A303 from Leamington will take about 1 and half hours ish, half hour to stonehenge, then cant remember from there to site. I live in Southamtpon so will use the A303 but it is an absolute pig of a road when you get near Stonehenge. It has constant accidents which generally lead to the road being closed, and few alternatives.

Because i live local i have a few alternatives that will not cost me much more time, however if you make the long journey that way and there is an accident then its going to cost you. But i suppose its not going to carry as much festival traffic as the M5 or M4 i guess. Pays your money and takes your chances.

I live in Coventry , which isn't that far from Leamington Spa and always use the M42, M5 route down to Glasto but find it's the last few miles from the motorway to get onsite that takes the time so I always try to arrive early in the morning to cut down delays.

There are back roads which the locals know about but have never been successful navigating them and have got lost so I just stick to the main routes nowadays and accept the delays.. :P
