Theyre nu-metal, and therefore metal, fool.

Just cause mogwai is a post-rock band, doesn't mean theyre not a rock band

Just cause blink 182 is a pop punk band, doesn't mean theyre not a punk band

Genres stem from roots of music, they may be dissimilar, and not liked by fans of the umbrella genre (ie. most punk fans may not like blink 182, some rock fans may not like mogwai, and of course (because nu-metal is ridiculed) many metal fans don't like slipknot, and any other nu/rap metal bands, like korn, linkin park, lim bizkit.

Nu metal, also spelled nu-metal, was originally used by the press to refer to heavy music that was not metal

Okay, bands that are nu-metal aren't just nu-metal, theyre labelled as partly alternative metal, rap-metal, heavy metal, and sometimes partly hardcore punk or industrial rock

Lets take the wikipedia definition of "Metal"

"With roots in blues-rock and psychedelic rock, the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, massive sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, emphatic beats, and overall loudness. Heavy metal lyrics and performance styles are generally associated with masculinity and machismo.[3]"

If you described a Slipknot song to a regular person, by saying it has a a thick, massive sound, with lots of distortion, emphatic beats, overall loudness and quite masculine lyrics and performance style - I think they would get the point wouldn't you?

That description wouldn't fit indie rock bands like Arctic Monkeys, nor would it fit pop punk bands like Blink 182. But it would fit bands ranging from Metallica, to Deftones, to Slipknot, to Tool, to Faith No More.

:P

Well, I'm not. It's a blindingly obvious observation. It has 'Metal' in the title to suggest that it originates from the world of Metal. Slipknot are a Metal band.

They come from a period in history whenever Metal was going through a transitional phase where it suddenly became cool to listen to music that was much heavier than your average Rock band but a bit lighter than, say, Slayer.

Nu Metal, I think, was a term coined by Kerrang around '99 or '00 to lump a lot of "alternative metal" bands into one big genre. Not to mention the fact a lot of them sounded the same. I remember hearing it and thinking, "what the f**k?" - most people I know have just referred to it as Metal because they considered the 'Nu' prefix to be somewhat disconcerting.

Thing is, there's more than just 'herp derp they're loud and pleh distort guitar and ahev duble bass drum' to metal. Yes, Slipknot do the above. However, they don't fufill enough proper metal requirements. In interest do you listen to metal?

Just because they list themselves as it, it doesn't mean that's what they are you tool, seeing as they didn't even give themselves that label - Roadrunner Records (their label) requires all of their artists to go under that genre label in retail and description (but not by sound obviously). By your logic, Paramore are metal because that's what they call it in music shops.

Depends what you consider metal, obviously not alot. But no, not in recent times. The closest I've liked to it (which I do not call metal, because it derrived from punk) is post-hardcore, bands like alexisonfire and early thrice, or hardcore punk bands like Fugazi. I used to like deftones and tool, which I would consider metal (although deftones alt metal, and tool progressive metal), and when I was alot younger, System of a Down. I also liked some technical death metal, like Quo Vadis, some mathcore/metalcore like DEP and Protest the Hero. I like Faith No More quite a bit, but theyre more Funk Metal.

So all in all, according to you, since I like subgenres of Metal, no, I do not listen to Metal.

Do you listen Metal?

Let's just agree to disagree, because face it, we're backing up our arguements with solid evidence, and you're saying "no, you're wrong". It's never going to go anywhere.

Also, ":3", what are you, 15?
