I really think england may regret not getting that second goal today. I have just looked at the last 3 teams who got to the world cup and who they beat to get to the final. France (Paraguay/italy/croatia), Brazil (belgium/england/turkey), Italy (australia/ukraine/germany). All only played 1 big team (and thats being kind to england) to get to the final. England will have to beat 2 possibly 3. Now dont get me wrong I think on there day england could beat anyone. In tournament football a game can turn on a bit of luck, a bad refereeing decision, an opposition off day which is why the best team in the world often doesnt win it. Howevr worse case scenario could see england having to beat germany, argentina, spain and brazil to win the cup.

I have never seen a team win the cup with that kind of run in and am not sure england have the ability to be the first. Especially as all the stats count against them. Only beat one world cup winner since 1966, will now have to beat 2 or 3 more. Since my time watching football in the world cup the best team they have beaten in the knockout is belgium 90. They will now have to beat 4 stronger teams in succession! Maybe im wrong and the likes of rooney and gerrard will explode but to me there is just too many factors against them.

Glad to see ghana go through. Its amazing that one of ghana, usa, uruguay, or south korea will be 1 match from a world cup final. People say once you can get to the semis anything can happen. However im not sure history supports that. When was the last time there was a real shock in a world cup semi. Cant remember one in recent times.

it was a good performance and one which warrented a lot more goals. It'll be a close game against the Germans and i think it'll go to extra time.

Listening to the radio today i was thinking its funny how different people interpret history.

1. Danny Baker said england always beat a big team in the world cup. Do they??

2. Apparently the african media really fancy england as they think they have a reocrd of coming strong at the knockout stage. Are they confusing italy and germany??

I would summarize englands world cup history as pretty consistent, normally get through the group without excelling, beat smaller teams in the knockouts, lose to similar strengths and better sides.

England should be putting in good perfromances against slovenia. I think what has come before has placed peoples expectations too low. Im sure germany wont think they looked terrible but they will hardly be quaking i their boots either. Germany were in a group with 3 teams better than slovenia in my opinion.

Think you have to remember Slovenia beat Russia to get to the world cup. They earned their place in the competition and i think Australia, Ghana and Serbia would have had close games with them.

Germany comfortably beat a poor Australia team. That shows if we don't turn up Germany will be the sort of team to punish us. But if we play to our strengths and our game winners take their chances we have nothing to fear against Germany.

Thats exactley what i think. Germany arnt exactley the best team in the competition, its just because of are poor history against them people are worrying about playing them. If England play to there best it should be a comfortable victory.

You are saying this as an england fan though, can you honestly say if you were german you would think the only chance of victory is england not performing. No you would be confident of germany winning. I have heard the comment today that if england play as well as they did against slovenia they will beat germany. I completely disagree, germany are far better than slovenia so england will almost certainyl have to improve.

I dont think you can disregard history as there are clear trends throughout the world cup of historical pedigree being a bigger factor in world cup success than short term form or individual talent. Its all well and good saying england will win if there best players perform, however none of them have previously shown much form in big games like this previously, so some may ask why will they start now. Maybe capello will get more out of them but the likes of gerrard, rooney and lampard are certainly not proven internaitonal players at the top level yet.

As a neutal I see it as a 50/50 game. I think the german players operate better as a team. I completely disagree with people who compare rooneys club form with klose, man utd and bayern arent in this world cup. I also think the germans have more self belief and are less scared of failiure. England howveer have a much more experienced squad and from memory young sides like germany often dont do as well. Werent italy 2006 the oldest in the compettion?

Yep, people are stupid and over react but what people are getting excited about is the preformace in which we dominated, it could of ended like the North Korea/Portugal game with a glutten of goals if the momentum was going.

On paper we are. We have more household names, but as a unit we don't gel as well as a team as the Germans do.

Apart of that is the mentality of the countries too Brzail & Argentina always celebrate but more reserved countries like Germany don't.
