Agree with a fair amount of that too, but you're a bit inconsistent in places; eg. Terry too old when he's a year younger than Gerrard.

I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss players purely on age either. Experience is massive and most nations retain a few older players in their first XI.

Yeah fair point but I was just doing some quick comments. In the case of Gerrard for example, he really is a team player, get his head down, works hard, usually plays alright, probably still got a lot to give and you need some experienced players in your team if you are going to blood youngsters. As you go on to point out in the rest of your post. Gerrard is the sort of players I would keep around.

I was amazed by the stats yesterday that germany had made something like 12 world cup semis in 15 world cups. Thats an amazing statistic and makes a mockery of their odds at the start of the tournament. It seems eveyone is getting behind germany now but I have a funny feeling spain are going to end up sneaking this one and the world cup. They havent been spectacular so far but nothing is won up to the quarter final stage.

The dutch team are interesting, not in the same class as the sides that failed to win the world cup in the late 70s and the 90s however they seem to have a bit of luck on their side which is a massive help in a tournament.

Theres a lot of talk about why the big names havent perfomed in this tournament with most people mentioning kaka, rooney, ronaldo and messi. Does anyone else think its a little unfair to group messi with the others. I agree he didnt reach his potential (particularly against germany) however he was infinitely better than the other 3. I think he played well in the other games but just didnt get the rub of the green when scoring a goal. Also thinking before the tournament, a lot of people were saying there were 3 world class players messi, ronaldo and rooney. Forgetting this world cup why was rooney considered a level above villa. Villa played just as well for a worse club and also has the better international track record. I wonder if its just because he didnt play for a big club because villa deserves to be talked about as one of the greatest strikers of the last 20 years.

Yeah, being the top scorer in the last two Champions Leagues has really shown him up as the chancer he is at that level. I remember watching him in La Liga last season and thinking he was a right shower - that goal a game average, ten-a-penny they are.
