Cardboard Box City
How they missed the deflection off the spanish players which should have resulted in a corner is beyond me.

pink_triangle
What impressed me about this spain side is how cool they are, depsite losing the first team they never paniced and always had a belief that they could be world champions. I would probably rate this team as the best I have seen, watching since italia 90.
brighteyes
Fine performance by Webb, thoroughly logical decision-making, which I'm sure FIFA will frown upon. De Jong challenge was just a high foot, yellow card, no problem - looked worse than it was. Van Bommel's tackle was actually much worse I reckon, but so early on I think it's reasonable [logical] to give a yellow. Personally I wasn't particularly impressed by Spain until the Germany match where they were great, not so great tonight though.
Langdale Wolf
Well done Spain. The stats don't do justice - EVERY side they faced tried to nullify them. They managed to break through every time. The succession of 1-0's isn't due to Spain playing negative football, merely Spain trying their hardest to break down sides who gave everything they had who tried to stifle them. They did their jobs well, and were worthy winners. The Dutch were a disgrace tonight.
Steve P
Well I'd agree with what some others have said on here, that overall this was one of the poorest ever world cups. Lots of things like the ball and the pitches contributed to it, but in the end the general negativity of sides was the problem. So few sides went out to really try and win games, instead just hoping to get a goal and the break. Which brings me to the second holding midfield player. While the formation might be effective, it's dreadful to watch. I can see it becoming the norm fairly quickly and the standard of football will drop with it. Spain certainly deserved to win last night, and through the tournament overall, due to the brilliant technical ability of all their players. However I won't consider this team to be up there with the greats like the Brazil side of 70 and the dutch of 74. winning the competition scoring only 8 goals is massively disappointing. Had Torres been fit they might have been a bit better, but the problem was with playing Biscuits and Alonso. I know i'm a bit biased, but playing Fabregas instead of one of those 2 would have made all the difference. As for the final, yes Holland were being pretty physical but isn't that what you're supposed to to against sides that are trying to play a passing game? As a gooner i was stunned at the hypocracy of Hansen and co last night. When teams go out to kick and outmuscle Arsenal (sometimes fairly, sometimes not) all I hear is that it's just part of the game and that we should grow up, in fact Hansen regularly laughs about it. Last night all I heard was how this evil team were trying to ruin the game and cheat the real footballing side. I'm not saying we're as good a side as Spain with our passing (although we are a lot more direct) but either the type of tactics employed by Holland are exceptable or not, no matter what the game or competition. Just gets on my tits.

Kowalski
Well that's the end of the worst world cup in living memory. Sadly the final summed up the tournament - disappointing. Very glad Spain won though, they are brilliant and showed so much patience right to the end. There's no better passers in the game than Xavi and Iniesta. Utterly dreadful performance from Webb. De Jong and Van Bommel should have seen red in the first half. Van Bommel in particular committed 3 or 4 yellow card offences in the first half. Steve P
I think those sorts of comparisons are difficult. To spains credit in many previous world cups the best team didnt win due to the way they were targeted by opposition. Spain were asked questions and they answered them. rexclark
Quite enjoyed the game last night, Spain were the deserved winners but the Dutch were unlucky, they had a good few chances to win it but never too there chances. As for the ref, I do have some sympathy for him, he'd be slated either way. He could have went to the letter of the law and sent off about three Dutch players and turned the game into a farce or take the softer approach which he did. Overall I've enjoyed this World Cup, football wise it's been poor but overall it's been interesting but certainly not one people will talk about in years to come. pink_triangle
Thinking back I enjoyed this tournamnet more than world cup 2002 as well which had too many mediocre sides going through. I suspect people have always moaned at the end of these tournaments especially when england dont perform. People will always look at the older tournaments through rose tinted glasses. One thing I liked about this tournament is that only 2 matches were settled by penalties and none of these 4 teams were ever going to win the tournament. A terrible tournament for the premiership epitomized last night by rvp doing nothing for the 7th succesive game. Kuyt was probably the best of a bad bunch. Cant believe before this tournamemt most people would have rated rooney ahead of xavi and iniesta.

Ed209
Im not sure position is that relevant. I heard several times (by different people) that there were 3 world class payers in this tournament. Ronaldo, Messi and Rooney, considering xavi and iniesta have proven themsleves year after year in la liga, in international tournaments and champions league finals. I find it odd they werent thought to be at rooneys level.

pink_triangle
"world class players" - my least favourite phrase in football. What the f**k does it mean? Can there only be 3 world class players in a world cup!?!?
