World Cup 2010

neil can call the performances flat, but i guess he wants to see the old england, charging about at 100mph, doing well for an hour, and then cocking up.

Nope, that's not what I'm wanting - I'm wanting a team that has the first idea what to do.

The only times recently they've shown themselves as a team with ideas and ambition is when Milner has come onto the pitch. Surely I'm not the only one to notice? :P

I know I'm not - after a number of their recentish games, there's been quite a few people post on here how Milner's presence has hugely improved the team, and given them back an idea of what they should be doing.

I suspect that's because Milner hasn't had his skill beaten out of him by managers shouting "you can't do that" in the way that just about every other player in England has. It only takes ten minutes of watching top-end non-English footie to spot the difference - the playing of balls that the English game won't accept, because manager 'wisdom' says that hoofing the ball anywhere else is better than what that manager says is a risky ball. Add to that the English idea that making a tackle that's very likely going to be a foul is always the right thing to do, and those two things pretty much cover where we always fall down.

These are things that are beyond Pat to address, no matter how fantastic he might be as a coach or at tactics.

I don't buy that at all mate. Milner is playing for one of the most rigid, position obsessed managers in the English game.

Oh I know. But when he comes on for England, he brings the team the dynamism they'd lacked in the game up to that point. No other current player seems able to do the same.

and lets not forget that despite its derision as a formation, it has actually worked for england before.

it worked extremely well when england had a footballing cb/sweeper (mark wright) to do the ball carrying, and i cant think of a better player for that formation than the current tottenham captain :P

what a mighty, mighty record you have. and lets not forget, thats when youve got past the might of the Faroe Islands, Andorra and Lichtenstein to actually qualify!!

now, i would suggest buggering off and creating your own 'im scottish and therefore no nothing about international football but i like to voice my insignificant and worthless opinions about the world cup' thread.

leave the real chat to people that have either

1) won it

or

2) haven't embarrassed their entire vanquished nation when they have qualified scraped past luxembourg

barring the fact that he's been out for a bit but seems to be back now......

id say the last couple of performances in meaningful games from a right-sided tottenham midfielder have been pretty electrifying too

while being as hit & miss as Theo, but less dangerous. :P

I'd take Lennon over SWP, but I'm not sure that Fabio will. He appears to think SWP has some versatility (which, let's face it, Lennon & Theo defo don't), which I reckon will have SWP on the plane before Lennon.
