Waterproof ponchos

A rather specific question this one.

For the last few years I've taken one of those rubberised German Army ponchos as my choice of rainwear. They're pretty much the dog's danglies for glasto - tough, durable and completely waterproof. The only downside is the weight of the things, so this year I decided to get myself a poncho in ripstop nylon.

It's nice and light, but now I'm beginning to wonder how waterproof it actually is. Running it under a tap for a minute seems to indicate that it's up to handling a soaking, but I feel a bit less confident that it'll? keep my arse dry sitting on potentially muddy ground!

Anyone here used one of the ripstop nylon ponchos?

BTW, it's not got any kind of PU backing, just plain nylon.

We took lightweight rip-stop nylon army ponchos last year, and during the heavy burst of rain on Friday morning they did leak a bit where contact was with the body, neck, shoulders, back etc. Our T-shirts got soaked under them. I'd not like to rely on it for sustained rain like in 2007. I'm reluctant to buy another poncho at this point, think I might just take my Gore-Tex waterpoof jacket.

Nothing keeps you dry like an umbrella!

Yopu can get them in poun shops now - i always have a couple in my bag - just to pull out when needed.

Sure you can't sit on it, but i get well miserable when i have a wet head!
