Whatever you think of Galloway, last night was a pretty extraordinary result. I don't think I've ever seen such a high vote in a by-election!

Yep. It shows a few things I reckon....

1. just how much all of the main parties are hated. They are only sustained via the FPTP voting system, which in most cases causes people to vote to try and keep a party or candidate out, rather than for people to vote for a candidate of their liking. If we had voting via PR where a vote always means something positive, I'm certain that their support would quickly fall away.

2. that there's a massive opportunity right now for a new party - providing it has a bit of sense of course (so not the likes of UKIP) - even within FPTP. All that new party would need is some sensible middle ground policies and candidates who would be trusted to try and deliver on those policies.

There's been some talk recently of doctors getting organised and putting themselves up for election at the next general election on a platform of reversing the recent NHS changes. If they were to do that then they'd wipe the main parties out in almost every seat I reckon, because few people within society are trusted in the way that doctors are, and these NHS changes are not wanted and weren't voted for by anyone.

What's up Doc? You are, for election I hope. It would be the best thing to happen to politics in this country in decades if not centuries.

It's funny isn't it. If Labour had won the seat with just 8,000 odd votes (which is clearly what they were expecting), theyd be proclaiming it as a damning indictment on the government.

Get defeated by 10,000 votes, it's all just a one off, doesn't represent anything etc.

Last night was nothing more than a one off... Galloway appealed to a big muslim population... Nothing more nothing less...

I agree that there's lots of unusual circumstances to last night, based on Galloway and Muslims.

But the size of the victory still demonstrates how anti the main parties people now are. There's no desire to vote for the tories or psuedo-tories, and the Ed Miller Band isn't seen as a PM.

So it's there for the taking by any new middle ground party that could get its act together - which I don't really expect to happen.

But if those doctors do, that would be a winner. I've no doubts about that.

I would not read too much in to it as yet. There is a massive difference from being arrested to getting charged. It could be malicious gossip as to why they have been arrested.
