sifi
To be honest, give your kids enough freedom from a young age and they'll work it out before the schools even got round to teaching them. I knew most of it by 10 (although a bit off on some details )

Alcatraz
Here you go. I sent you to the war where You lost your legs but maybe this will make you feel better That's sickening. As much as its a very generous gift to a very important cause, if I was an injured soldier, I'd find it very hard to be grateful for it Edited August 16, 2010 by Alcatraz
RABun
Internet language At one point during the exchange, Mr Poole was asked to define "rickrolling". "Rickroll is a meme or internet kind of trend that started on 4chan where users - it's basically a bait and switch. Users link you to a video of Rick Astley performing Never Gonna Give You Up," said Mr Poole. "And the term "rickroll" - you said it tries to make people go to a site where they think it is going be one thing, but it is a video of Rick Astley, right?," asked the lawyer. "Yes." "He was some kind of singer?" "Yes." "It's a joke?" "Yes." Edited August 16, 2010 by RABun

RABun
I can see the Aussie's point. The royal family has no real impact for them. For us though i think they are still an important fixture. One of the things that ensures the UK is somewhere people want to visit is because of the royal family and our cultural heritage. I think we need to let go of our collective guilt for the Empire and admit that we would not have as much going for us if it was not for the royals. I don't really see the problem with Camilla being a consort, (she won't be queen) she can't be any worse than Philip can she? And do they really have that much of an impact on our daily lives? Charles at least has views that he openly shares, i don't agree with a lot of them but i think it is clear that he has compassion for people if you look at the works his charities do for young people. philipsteak
The flag is probably talked about more than the republicanism debate. Even some who are pro monarchy want to change the flag usually going for something involving the silver fern or trying to incorporate some Maori images

philipsteak
totally agree, loads of people visit here the UK because of the royal family, what other reason is there for visiting? markeee
Didn't want to start a new thread for this post - I watched that 'ngiht cops' on sky3 yesterday, Up in Edinburgh , 3 lads set about one guy, knock him unconscious, police come etc, the lads have all run off and are found hiding in the park nearby, turns out from witness statements, they were using their belts as weapons.., anyway, they got charged with something stupid like breach of the peace..didn't get much at all, how the hell is this sufficient? how does it deter these guys or others from committing attacks like this again?! On the same show there was a drunk guy starting on random people in town, police arrest him, turns out he's a junkie too, he's shouting and swearing at the arresting officer, causing a right nuisance, and despite all of that he gets a fixed penalty fine..80 quid, and that's it..which I'd bet doesn't get paid (millions of pounds worth of fines go unpaid every year) - Used to be a case of if you're abusive/assault a police officer you're in trouble..but these days, you read about some teenager hitting a cop and not actually getting anything for it?! how does this kind of punishment help to prevent people committing crimes?nothing seems to happen to them Edited August 17, 2010 by markeee
t8yman
I was reading earlier about some pubs round here (stoke) who are being taken to court for showing premier league games on a saturday, one landlord says 'with stoke in the prem we can treble our takings' he then goes on to criticise sky for charging so much - hang on a second, sky big company..want to make big profits, pub landlord also wants big profits? but thinks its wrong they charge him a lot, poor poor pub landlord eh? but he thinks nothing of charging 3.50 a pint so he can get big profits! Pogues Mcgogues
I'd imagine if you could actualy go in Buckingham Palace and walk around it, rather than simply stand outside it, then it would be much more of a toursit attraction surely?
