I've just listened to Enema of the state, thrice, tonight and its reaffirmed the opinion I never had before I wrote this post* that its one of the best pop albums of all time.

Its flawless

Others may disagree...And Im sure Id agree, not whilst listening though

And thats the point

then the rest comes... listen...learn...grow down...enjoy.........die

*I suspect I posted the same in 2003

It depends what you're looking for, I suppose.

To me, a flawless album is 'Loveless' by My Bloody Valentine. 'Psychocandy' by The Jesus and Mary Chain is another. Stone Roses' debut is another. OK Computer, Surfer Rosa, Nevermind...

Enema of the State? Hmmmm... not really. It's all subjective, of course, but I think if you're going to give that album as much praise as you do then you need a similar comparative measure like, say, 'Americana' by The Offspring or 'Dookie' by Green Day; all of which pretty much offer the same 'idea' - like, accessible Punk Rock. I can't stand any of them personally - are they all flawless? As pop albums, yes. As punk albums, no. A flawless album would be one that is both flawless as a pop album and flawless as a Punk album... and that, to me, is 'London Calling' by The Clash.

Saturday on the mainstage, at Leeds, is a day I will avoid happily.

I think Mike Davis made a very good point when announcing the lockup and talking about the festival in general. He said he'd seen Blink and Green Day play together, and that Green Day had monumentally outplayed Blink. I think it shows a problem that Blink have, in that as far as pop'punk bands go, or bands that started pop-punk anyway (I've more sense than to start the 'what genre are Green Day?' discussion), Green Day are just so much better as a live act.

Having said that, I honestly think Blink ae gonna be the highlight of the weekend. I think if they nail these two shows it could be a career defining weekend for them. If they up there game and show they can put on just as good a show as Green Day thenit'll make up for the fact that they've been a fairly average live band for some time now.

I think a lot of it is down to the fact green day have had a lot more hits and therefore your average festival goer will probably know twice the amount of songs. Also green days front man is far more charismatic of a twat which can add to the perception of a set.

Personally, I like neither band. I won't deny in my youth that I used to watch 'Basket Case' when they played it on MTV2 repeatedly, and enjoyed it, but I think the whole novelty of commericalising Punk music is what killed it in the first place.

It's like Pepsi, isn't it? I mean, in the beginning you had an organic product that had organic ingredients. where everything was natural, and then whenever these ingredients became too expensive, the company cut corners to make a cheaper alternative packed to the brim full of processed bullshit that was likely to give you brain lesions. It lacks all of the natural ingredients that made it what it was and if you give a new can of Pepsi to a person who drank the original formula, they'd just spit it out.

Same with Punk. Fortunately, most people who listen to and enjoy Punk tend to have quite a varied and open-minded taste in music but most of the original fans of it would quite happily deny the existence of bands like Green Day or Blink 182 - the latter especially - because they're bands that lack all of the original, natural punch the older bands had.

I've been in several Punk bands before (between the ages of 15 to 18) and I always treated them as stepping stones. It's a good place to start off and learn your craft but it's not a genre you can develop much in - a bit like Metal, actually. Dumb people stay in Punk bands. Intelligent people get out of Punk bands when they know every stone has been unturned with the music.

Green Day have been doing the same thing for nearly 20 years now - work out what type of people they are.

I'm not claiming for a moment that Green Day are a punk band in the same category as Sex Pistols or one of the original punk bands. My point was that, for people like myself who are fans of pop-punk as a genre in its own right, Green Day are a mind blowing live act.

What Mike Davies alluded to, and what I would argue here, is that Blink will always have Green Day there to be compared to and, thus far, they have appeared deservedly average. I think Reading and Leeds is an opportunity for them to propel themselves and make more of a mark. I'm really looking forward to seeing if they can pull it off.

Blink-182 don't really appeal to me either i'm afraid. You might rip into me but it just seems like quite amusing pop punk, but nothing more than that. I get why people like it, just doesn't really feel like greatness is likely to happen. Especially on a night to end the festival.

Will just skip them i'm afraid.

I think after a few pints you could put the f**king Wombles onstage and the crowd would react postively. It wouldn't make much of a difference that late at night whenever everybody is either high or pissed.

Stay sober, become straight edge - whatever, you'll see Blink 182 how you would normally see them. A mediocre band who aren't at their peak, playing a festival to fill the void because everybody else who IS good has been booked by other festivals or completely forgotten in the annals of time. When I saw their name as a headliner I was left utterly confused by their inclusion when a band like the recently reformed Soundgarden, sound as fresh as a daisy, able to blow practically every other band out of the water, a band I would consider a "typical Reading or Leeds band", are forgotten.

Blink 182 won't shine on Saturday at Leeds or Reading on Sunday, they'll just remind everybody just how irrelevant they are and always have been. Saturday night (without looking at the clash finder for reference) will just be me and my girlfriend sitting by our tent in the company of our neighbours getting drunk and talking about good music.

What I think some people are missing the point about why they'e headlining

Sure they may not be a great live band or be incredibly original

but they were the soundtrack to a lot of the festival audience's early teens and good memories

Getting pissed in a field with friends listening to Blink 182, gonna bring out a lot of overgrown 14 year olds

I reckon they're gonna be one of the highlights of the weekend and cant wait :)

Can't say I've ever been a fan but unless someone amazing gets announced on the FR stage I'll probably go see them with my girlfriend. i wasn't too impressed when I saw a bit of them in 2003.
