The idea was that it would surprise everyone so much that by the time the defenders had realised what they were trying, Henry would have got the ball, without needing to encroach. If you look at the video, Henry would have been there first.

Yup - would have been allowed as long as Henry was outside the area when Pires made contact with the ball.

Incidentally, if a penalty taker takes the kick and it comes back off the woodwork, it wouldn't be allowed if the penalty taker then scored without it touching any other player.

not really though, cos that would be done to have a clear advantage. hitting it off the post surely puts the ball back into play for all to touch. least it would be if i wrote the rules. it's not as if he's hit the post deliberately to gain an advantage.

But technically, the post is merely a marker, and serves no other purpose than the goal line or the corner flag. You can't hit the ball twice in a row from a set piece.

Similarly, if you hit a crap shot that is heading for a throw in and it hits the ref and goes in, it's a goal because the ref - like the post - isn't an active participant.

I always thought it'd be great to take your dog to the game and train it to dribble the ball into the net. Though that'd probably be one for the dubious goals panel.

I'd be very, very surprised if you found one. If you can, the ref has got it wrong. If the keeper tips it onto the post and the player scored the rebound, that's okay because another player has made contact with the ball between the taker's two touches. But if it's penalty - post - shot by the same player - goal, it's not a goal.

which refs regularly do. i just thought the post wouldn't have come into it. i knew you couldn't take a free kick or throw in to yourself or whatever, but didn't know that. learn suhin new everyday! perhaps i'll learn the offside rule tomorrow!
