Alonso was a huge loss for them, granted.

But he scored barely any goals, and Lucas who was used mostly as his replacement was clearly being mis-used in some way by Rafa most of the time, because on occasions he showed himself to be an awful lot better than how he mostly played.

But with Cole in squad now, Gerrard is likely to slot back into one of the central midfield roles (with Lucas as his backup I'd guess), which is supposedly where Gerrard prefers to play. So it should be as good a team as with Alonso, providing Cole can make an impact at the front comparable to Gerrard's.

Cant believe all the hype about capello dumping beckham. Listening to some media people you would think he was one of the greatest england internationals of all time. In my opinion he was never more than average in an international tournament and generally worse. When you look past the hype he is nowhere near the class of scholes and giggs from the same generation. He is loved by the media which means every good thing he has done for england ove rrecent years has been greatky exagerated. I dont see what beckham has to offer england now other than schmoozing influential people. He was extremely greedy in going to MLS and only has himself to blame that his career has been going downhill in recent years. To be fair to him he obviously has chosen good advisors who have made him very rich.

Get yourself in there lad.

I dont mind holding up my end of deal - I'll drive him to either Liverpool or London.

A rather cynical point that has been raised a few times locally is that Jones actually counts as a homegrown player given how long he has been in country for.

That's not the point though is it. The point is he fairly regularly makes blunders like that. Not so bad when you're playing the bolton's of this world and can score a couple - when you do it against the better teams, a blunder is going to cost you at least a point and more often than not all three. Like his blunder against Man Utd last season (or was it the season before?).
