I would love to see the Foos and Pearl Jam headline (although the above post suggests that may be ruled out already), and although Im not a fan of either, I think that Linkin Park or Slipknot would make for a good headliner. Would love to see 'Tallica there though, here's hoping.

I am officially old, and the thought of PJ, SG and IM headlining next year would be a big "no sale" for me. I LIKE to see some contemporary bands. The next generation of headliners needs to be found, and until someone takes some risks - we are gonna be stuck with maiden, metallica etc for donkeys.

To realy guess right you have to look at the pattern that Download headliners tend to, but not always, have.

One big big headliner who has already done their money milking shows in the UK and is glad to get asked back, but are a perfect fit for Download.

One realy good "legendary" band who couldn't realy headline another festival in the UK.

Possibly a band who you wouldn't think too much as headline material to begin with.

Soundgarden. Probably will be their big major return to the UK.

Iron Maiden. Will be touring new album, would have been 4 years since they played last and doing Soni this year and did htier own big show on the tour before.

Pearl Jam. Nicely fit the 'big classic rock act' space.

I also think Copping has cottoned onto the fact that the Downlaod audience is older and maturer than Reading/Leeds and Sonsipheres and that the odl bands go down really well at Doni.

well soundgarden seem a pretty decent shout to me

i'd much rather them than PJ tbh.

then a big old band like metallica/maiden/bon jovi

and then how about someone you dont expect to be that big like... machine head? always a big crowd, always killer live, got the back catalogue, not sure there'd be too many dissenting "not enough big songs" voices like have been levelled at a few of the higher placed acts of recent years (MCR? Lostprophets? TCV?)

Linkin Park are very likely. Download website was heavily promoting their arena tour recently and a new album is due out soon.

Soundgarden probably but could end up at Sonisphere or Reading/Leeds (where they wouldn't headline).

Ozzy is a possibility, but with Ozzfest in the UK this year, may not be touring next year.

Foo Fighters would be amazing, I really hope they're signed already.

My Chemical Romance maybe, but I see them headlining Reading/Leeds if Blink 182 can.

I seriously hope the people above suggesting Metallica are joking, I've seen them a hundred times now and I haven't wanted to once.

So I will go with 3 out of Linkin Park/Soundgarden/Ozzy Osbourne/Foo Fighters/My Chemical Romance.

I don't especially want to see Muse again tbh, not yet anyway. Wouldn't mind Maiden though. Or Linkin Park. Or Trivium either for that matter, although having headlined second last time, I don't see them coming back for another go without the same slot or a good mainstage place.

There are others but they're not headliners so they have no place in this thread :D

ETA : im a bit 'hmm'about RHCP at Download, although I bet if they were announced I wouldn't mind so yeah, why not :)

Mr Copping has been on twitter a bit in the last week after being quiet for a while

Says on Nickleback headlining 2011... ''I certainly wouldn't rule Nickelback out''

Also said he wouldn't book A7X as headliner, but im guessing they may be booked the way he's been speaking about them.

HOLY SHIT reading through, he says he's considering Paramore as a headliner for next year, as in the mainstage, is he mad! I know they're popular, but I think as headliner that would go down like a lead balloon

I have a feeling next year could be similar to the 2008 "year of lesser headliners". Considering the ammount spent on AC/DC, I think it's entirely feasable we could be seeing some first time headliners.

Linkin Park have a new album out next month, but haven't played Reading/Leeds since 2003, so could well end up there instead.

There's a chance Blink 182 will have a new album out by then so they could play Download to promote that.

In terms of bands waiting in the wings, I just can't see the likes of: Paramore, Biffy Clyro, A7X, Bullet For My Valentine, Trivium etc. Being able to pull in the punters (paramore are arguably big enough, but Download isn't really their audience)

In terms of 1st timers I'd love to see Stone Sour or Machine Head given the nod over the above, but it seems unlikely unless their new albums do alot better than expected.

I wouldn't be against Nickelback, bit of a guilty pleasure and I've never seen them live - and supposedly they are pretty damn good live.
