Just finished Paddy Ashdown's autobiography. An excellent read. The stuff he has done in his life (Royal Marines, SBS, MI6, High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, and not to mention his secretary!) must put any other MP to shame.

Now reading this:

Recently read One Day, which was great in the first half but a bit rushed feeling in the second half; Room which was a great read; Girl with the Dragon Tattoo which was fabulous; and Even the Dogs by Jon McGregor which was grim-tastic.

Started reading 50 Shades of Grey, to see what all the fuss was about. Not impressed so far - the writing seems poor, and rich spoilt control freaks don't do it for me. I much prefer the Jack Reachers of the writing world.

I haven't got to any sexy bits so far, either. Or discovered any depths to any character, either.

A book I'd recommend - if you are into stories about drug smuggling and prisons is;

Escape: The True Story of the Only Westerner Ever to Break Out of the Bangkok Hilton by David McMillan

I had difficulty believing that this blokes story was true. It's too 'fantastic' a life to be believed. Then I did some background searches and found that whole elements were fact (but only in that Wicki and other sites state as such) so have no real ground on which to doubt the rest of the story. If it's not fact then Mr McMillan has a ferocious imagination.

I am totally sick of hearing about them and hearing women at work giggling about the sexy bits. These same women would go nuts if they caught their husbands watching porn...

For a good book I can highly recommend The Help. Not sure I want to see the film but wouldn't have thought they could balls it up.

I recently Finished Perdido Street Station by China Meiville. A really good (if slightly too long) read. It's a great mash up of fantasty, sci-fi and steampunk. The world he's created is described with immaculate detail and in some ways, the world itself is the star of the show. Can't wait to read the next one (there are 3 books in this series).

I've now moved on to The Lathe Of Heaven by Ursula Le Guin.

I can't see what all the fuss is about with Fifty Shades of Grey. It's like a Mills and Boon with sex. The masterful (control freak) flawed male, and the submissive female virgin (naturally!) overcome by his powerful magnetism and sexual expertise. I'm bored with all the sex in it, I was hoping for more of a plot. The girl comes across as a total airhead. It could have had such potential in the hands of a good writer. Even I could have done a better job!

I'll give The Help a go, it sounds much more my thing.

On the topic of 50 Shades Of Grey, I keep seeing women reading it on the train/tube so I have started watching their expressions for when they get to the dirty bits ever since I read in this thread it's basically a porno.
