Picked up Absolute All Star Superman at the weekend. A magical piece of work and if I havent mentioned it on here yet a work that is at the same time incredibly easy to get into for a newbie or returning comic book fan yet also a work of alarming depth, spectacular invention and general magnificence for the experienced reader. The new introduction to the work speculates that there is a PhD thesis just waiting to be written on Issue #10 alone.

:P

Its just a brilliant brilliant comic book.

- - -

Morrison speaks (very movingly IMO) about the whole thing in his own inimitable hyperbolic style.

What, above all else, would you like people to take away from All Star Superman?

GM: That we spent a lot of time thinking about this!

No. What I hope is that people take from it the unlikelihood that a piece of paper, with little ink drawings of figures, with little written words, can make you cry, can make your heart soar, can make you scared, sad, or thrilled. How mental is that ?

That piece of paper is inert material, the corpse of some tree, pulped and poured, then given new meaning and new life when the real hours and real emotions that the writer and the artist, the colourist, the letter the editor translated onto the physical page, meet with the real hours and emotions of a reader, of all readers at once, across time, generations and distance.

And think about how that experience, the simple experience of interacting with a paper comic book, along with hundreds of thousands of others across time and space, is an actual doorway onto the beating heart of the imminent, timeless world of "Myth" as defined above. Not just a drawing of it but an actual doorway into timelessness and the immortal world where we are all one together.

My grief over the loss of my dad can be Superman's grief, can trigger your own grief, for your own dad, for all our dads. The timeless grief that's felt by Muslims and Christians and Agnostics alike. My personal moments of great and romantic love, untainted by the everyday, can become Superman's and may resonate with your own experience of these simple human feelings.

In the one Mythic moment we're all united, kissing our Lover for the First time, the Last time the Only time, honouring our dear Dad under a blood red sky, against a darkening backdrop, with Mum telling us it'll all be okay in the end.

If we were able to capture even a hint of that place and share it with our readers, that would be good enough for me.

I urge you to read it if you havent. Its one of those amazing books you will return to again and again. Fine addition to any geeks shelf.

Batman 3 movie news...

It's called The Dark Knight Rises

I bet it ain't. That's a really clumsy, nothing title.

I would love it they released absolutely no official news, other than the next film was called "The Dynamic Duo". I'd just sit back laughing watching the internet explode.

I thought the name was complete crap too but it's been confirmed by Nolan himself and I don't think he has a sense of humour, unless of course he was the one responsible for that Cher as Catwoman rumour.

I putting my money on the baddie being two of these...

Two Face

Talia Al Ghoul

Catwoman

Hugo Strange

Black Mask

The Dark Knight Rises brings to my mind an image of a lazarus pit, so for me at least I'm guessing we might see Liam Neeson back as Ra's Al Ghul - Nolan did say something about characters from the first two films returning didn't he? And maybe Talia will be with him this time. Given the last film ended with Batman taking the role of the villain for the sake of his city, is it possible that the Dark Knight rising could be his return to the role of Gotham's hero?

It's all just stupid speculation for the next 2 years anyway, until the viral campaign gets going again.

Picked up my 1st comic this morning (I only buy Tradebacks and maybe a few issues of X-Men/Batman when was 7ish), it was the new Action Comics issues as it had Death from Sandman pop up in it.

Excellent issue they capture both Death & Lex Luthor perfectly and it was nice seeing Lex treat her a supervillian and trying to argue with her but she would let him, the only problem is I want more Endless stuff to read now. Would love to see a Destruction/Delirium (my 2 faves) meet the Joker in a similar fashion to this.

Whether it was first mentioned in this thread or elsewhere I agree that they should seriously consider using Hush in the new movie. He is certainly preferable to Riddler/Penguin/Croc/Freeze etc. If done wrong Talia could turn out to be camper than a row of tents aswell. For a series so grounded in meta-reality there is no need to introduce magic in my opinion. The grotesque side to Hush's character fits perfick with Nolan's overall vision of the Bat universe.

Doubt Hush would be in it, the base concept for Nolan's Batman flicks is crime, justice etc. in Gotham and Hush is very much about his vendetta against Bruce Wayne a personal thing which would probably take away from completing the arc he wants to do with Batman.

With the Tom Hardy is to play Harvey Bullock rumour could be there are no bat-villians in it, unlikely but if you have Bullock as clashing with Gordon over his loyalty to him and his distaste for Batman could make it intresting without repeating it self from the other films. The Rise bit does make me think he'll return to his postion as a role model like at the start of The Dark Knight.

Very cool Marvel Zombie outfits bro! Spiderman in particular looks badass.

Sounds like a perfect option with those 500 free comics! Ive read some of the most recent run on Wolverine and all of Civil War. McNiven's art is glorious in CW - some of the best work ive ever seen tbh.

What Marvel spin offs did you get? Sounds like a serious amount of stuff!

I might preorder about 3 copies of Superman Earth One. Then if I have children I can sell it when they're 21.

Doesn't work like that anymore have a look on Ebay and comics from the last 20ish years are only worth a few quid more. Buying comics as an investment has caused comics market to crash twice (Marvel even went bankrupt) as the new ones are overproduce and aren't rare unlike the the old ones where kids would damage them to f**k before people realised that it would become rare/worth loads later on in life.

Did I mention I was also going to set fire to the world's supply of comics?

Has anyone seen the Green Lantern footage, reminds me alot of Fantastic Four.

I saw it, yeah.

The tone is seemingly about as far from The Sinestro Corps War as its possible to get. I'm really only familiar with the current extended Geoff Johns lantern stuff, so maybe I'm not the best person to judge its qualities. From the outset I was confident that Reynolds was the right man for Hal Jordan. Hopefully the movie is quite dark in places with effects that don't wreck the whole movie.
