I don't think the curriculum should allow the opting out of music, geography history and certainly not mathematics! Why would you think opting out of mathematics is something to consider. Its absurd! I've made my point about music, it requires no further clarification. I just think its crazy that you are going to force our child daily to study music , or be forced to play a musical instrument. I assume by your reasoning regarding other subjects, that you will also force your child on a daily basis to practice mathematics, english, geography et al. I think art is very important ... all children enjoy it - try forcing your child to paint you a picture every day, see if they stick with that! Most private schools require it for what reason?? Oh, and these experts you talk of ... reference it of GTFO. Edited August 24, 2010 by oafc0000

I was staring at him and you said something and he stared at me as I started laughing, he must of thought I was just laughing at him. So it is recognised, and children are required to take part (admittedly they don't have to learn an instrument). I took piano lessons, did all the grades and then quit immediately afterwards as I was fed up of having it forced on me. I hated it at the time and it made me miserable having to get up and practice for half an hour each morning, but now I'm kinda grateful my parents put me through it. I've got grade 8 piano which is kinda cool. I've started taking lessons again for my own pleasure and i'm enjoying it a lot more than i ever did. So I'm fairly mixed on this one. If i had a kid who didn't want to do it, I don't think I could bare putting them through what i had to do knowing how much they hated it. But I do think music is good for kids. bands/orchestras etc .. teach you loads of good skills, and sometimes kids don't know whats best for them. So i would definitely encourage it. As for whether music is as important as English, Maths, Science etc then in terms of life prospects definitely not but art/music/drama are good for the soul and that's very important. I think a kid should be encouraged to to have an interest in one of those. Edited August 25, 2010 by oafc0000
