100 days. 100 cuts

Purple Monkey is right.

It also might sound harsh, but at the end of the day, the government shouldnt have to pay people to work in jobs that dont need doing or cant be afforded.

My favourite one from that list is "Stay on in Liverpool scheme." Just googled it and cantfind out much about it, but sounds very much like paying people to stay in and work in Liverpool. Reminds me of how every time i'm on a train from Manchester to Liverpool, the train is always nearly totally empty, but one the way back its always totally full. A totally ridiculous scheme that should never have been allowed.

Makes you think when Liverpool gets all upset and wheels Phil Redmond out to say how cultural Liverpool is because the The Beatles were from there and should therefore be immune from any cuts, who the coalition will appoint as the new Heseltine de facto Minister for Liverpool.

To be fair, a lot of the cutting on that list has come from councils, rather than the government. I wont get started on the BANES council because historically they're terrible with overspending on total shite (the spa being the biggy). Cutting the subsidised school travel is quite a big deal for those who live in the villages who have to take a bus ride of about 20 miles in some cases, considering a 3 mile bus journey for me one way costs 2.90

48. Day care centres, Liverpool, £9m

52. The Station youth club, Bristol, £5m frozen

86. Gwent Young People's Theatre, Abergavenny, £255,113 funding cut to £30,000

88. Free and subsidised school travel, Bath, £63,000

100. New Hook Norton Playground, Oxfordshire, £47,000

OK, shouldn't have said "good to see them get the axe" that was pretty stupid and insensitive - what I meant was that there is not much that is sacred and while this whole situation is shit, at least it's saying to the "think of the children - CHILDREN ARE OUR FUTURE!" brigade that a) Don't try pulling the heart-strings and b ) Maybe the key to our survival and improved way of life is to stop adding more problems to solve? Maybe making people think really, really carefully before having a kid is actually a good thing? It is a pretty naive world I live in here.

It's not about pulling at the heart strings though. Every piece of research (not that research is really necessary as it's fairly obvious really) shows early intervention is massively less expensive than picking up the pieces after <snip>stationery is fairly ridiculous though!

That doesn't include the wholesale selling off of public land to private investors:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2010/aug/13/plan-sell-nature-reserves-austerity-countryside

The coalitions plan for selling minority or majority stakes in all of Natural England's national nature reserves.

Among the plans being considered by the government, which once declared itself "the greenest ever", are the selling off of national nature reserves; privatising parts of the Forestry Commission; privatising the Met Office, and withdrawing grants to British Waterways, which manages 2,200 miles of canals and rivers.

Natural England, the government's principal nature conservation agency, has put forward 400 job cuts next year, and up to another 400 after that, potentially one third of its workforce.

There are also concerns that the Environment Agency, which looks after waterways, air and soil, will have to slash spending on pollution and waste controls and river protection.
