People who call Guns N' Roses a tribute band are either...

A) People who have no idea what they're talking about. – That is debatable in my case but it is my opinion after following music for 25 years that Axl has become a tribute act to his former band.

B.) Are just following the crowd. – In my opinion the majority of people going to watch Axl and friends will just be following the crowds as the majority of people who see them at Reading and Leeds don’t even know who is in the band anymore

C) Just didn't like the band to begin with. – I loved the band in the 80s and 90s but the simple fact is they are no longer the Guns n Roses they once were

It's f**king old. get over it.

Go and see them, they'll blow you the f**k away.

I’ve got no problem with Axl Rose playing, I just think he should be playing under his own name.

I really do hope they surprise everyone who watches them but I think its going to be a car crash.

Thanks for all the advice, I think I will watch LCD, they sound the best option.

Josh Homme wrote the first Queens album on his lonesome though, and recorded most of it bar drums by himself as I recall, so he is the original member of Queens of the Stone Age, Oliveri isn't even an original member it's always been a revolving door band.

Which of the current Guns n Roses members (Axl apart) have had any hand in writing the songs they will be playing so basically they are a tribute band with Axl fronting.

Axl may have helped write lyrics and even contributed to the writing of songs but he didn’t play any of the guitar riffs that made the band as exciting as they once were.

Come just go and see Guns N' Roses! If you enjoyed Slash at Glasto then surely you'd enjoy it.

I don't really subscribe to the 'it's not really Guns N' Roses' chat anyway. Izzy, Slash etc made big contributions but the band was always 50%+ Axl.

Plus, I'm personally looking forward to hearing the new stuff as well as the classics. Chinese Democracy's easily better than either Use Your Illusion album.

To de-rail this thread even further, I have no real interest in GnR and think that calling them a tribute band is way off, but to suggest that they're the same as any other band who have replaced other members is either naiive or foolish.

Their popularity at the time, the acrimonius way that they split, the time between the last album with all of the members and the next album with only one, the rapid turnover of the 'replacements' and the attitude of the remaining member towards the others are all unique to this particular case which means that you can't just say that "it's just like Oasis/Weezer/Soundgarden/Foo Fighters/whoever, they replaced original members too".

The only situation that comes close is Hole, but even that doesn't really compare due to the shorter length of time before the 'revival' and the fact that Hole was (rightly or wrongly) pretty much Courtney Love anyway in the public's eye, whereas the other GnR members all contributed in more of a way to the image of GnR than the other members of Hole did.

So anyway, it isn't the GnR that everyone loved, and even the one remaining member is a pale imitation of his former self, but if they turn up on time and sound good then they (or the old they) have the songs to carry it off.
