Wellies & Yacht/Deck boots

There are a fair few topics about wellies v hiking boots etc and plenty of information within.

I have decided that wellies are for me - hiking and walking boots, in my opinion, is going to be too much of a pain if they do get soaked and clarted in mud (I wouldn't be investing in expensive, fully waterproof ones if I was to get some).

Leaves me with wellies - again, won't be spending Hunters money but open to suggestions. Had some in the past and they friggin knacked me feet so would be wanting some 'comfy' ones or will be adding some insoles.

Came across Yacht boots / deck boots - has anyone used these before and are they any good?

I have a pair of sailing wellies in my wardrobe which I used during the mudbath of 2007.

Terrible mistake. Sailing wellies have smooth soles with miniscule cracks in them which are perfect for expelling water and keeping you glued to the deck of a ship at sea. They do NOTHING to expel mud. Basically, I spent 2007 sliding around like new-born Bambi. If there was even the slightest hint of a slope, I'd slide all the way to the bottom. I ended up on my arse every few minutes.

I now use a normal pair of wellies and they're fine. Just make sure you go down to an army surplus place and get the thickest pair of submarine socks you can, and you wont have any problems with blisters on your feet.

As for the great Wellies v. Walking boots debate: I've got both, but when it's really bad I prefer to use the wellies, as they're easier to clean off and you don't have to deal with boot laces which are caked in a horrible mess.

i would really think about hiking boots; i got mine from http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/ for £50 (reduced from £95) and they're goretex so totally waterproof and breathable (i've splashed around in the sea with them on and my feet kept dry). plus a pair of cheap gaiters to keep your laces dry and mud free and you're sorted.

Muck boots ftw. I used ordinary wellies in 2009 and they were uncomfortable. Fortunately I didn't need them that much. I bought low muck boots for last year, and while I didn't need them for Glastonbury, I REALLY needed them at Green Man. They were comfortable for 4 days of standing/walking. I did add cushion insoles which helped for the standing part.

You should be able to get them cheaper than Hunters as well. Google is your friend.
