Must be a troll I guess.

Morning Glory has nothing on any of the first three or four Clash albums. And actually what poll are you on about for greatst album? Because most don't see Oasis anywhere near but London Calling is usually very near the top ten...

Although by using the sales argument I'm wasting my time, you're a troll.

What utter garbage. Defintely Maybe and WTSMG place extremly highly on most greatest albums ever polls most of the time above London Calling. Recent polls I've seen such as hmv, mtv, Q, NME, Channel 4 etc. all had the first 2 albums near the top above anything by The Clash and a few of them actually had DM as the greatest album of all time so how you can come out with such as statement I don't know. Your obviously a very big Clash fan with the user name and only a big fan can come out with a comment that an album such as 'Give em enough rope' or sandinista is anywhere near as good as Oasis' first 2 albums. Not even Mick Jones would come out with that statement. Its clearly not the case!

Rubbish. I hate generalising but I'm pretty sure the people who are only into KOL because of Sex On Fire are probably more dickish than MCR fans that are just into them because of The Black Parade. The rock fans at R&L are for the most part ok, it's the trendy kids that are the issue.

If we are generalising then what you just described tends to be the same group.

Either of these...

A) The ones who listen to radio and think they like the festival because they like rock groups like Kings Of Leon (Sex On Fire), My Chemical Romance (Black Parade) or say Paramore (twilight).

B. The ones who genuinely like they type of music the festival will offer, but are still in the progression stage of going from pop into general rock... via bands such as mcr.

C) The ones who like a song, see the festival on tv... freinds go. They go to be cool.... and act like dicks.

D) The ones who are young girls who like the most recent trends... which incapsulates the entire KOL, MCR etc clingers on. This may apply to some guys too.

E) The ones who used to be emo/scene... but have developed on but because MCR have now changed their style it's ok to like them still.

F) Actual fans of the band.

list goes on really.

A: Twilight isn't anything to do with Paramore anymore.

B: MCR are not and have never been a pop band.

C: Nobody but nobody goes to a festival for one song at the prices of today, at least not what I saw from this years crowd anyway.

D: MCR have been on hiatus for the last two years and KOL are not and never have been a trend.

E: MCR never really changed, they just evolved.

F: Which make up about 90% of the audience at Reading.

I doubt the trendy crowd will be massive MCR fans, I'd imagine they'd look down there noses at the weirdo music. If Marilyn Manson became a Radio 1 act would they follow him? Same difference.

The majority of the dicks at the fest aren't there for the music so it makes little difference but an act like MCR will definately attract alot less dicks than an act like Kasabian.

Well now i never said every band that is played on Radio 1 will be popular with these people.

That said, Marilyn Manson on the NME tent woudl be f**king insance. Might put on a better festival gig too.

Depends what you call a dick. People that go to the festival with no knowlege of anythong other that MCR KOl and such acts piss me off just as much as the laddish types of the Prodigy/arctic monkeys crowds.

Well if Clash fans aren't allowed to have a say on which albums are better then of course people will say Oasis' are ;) I think both albums you mentioned are better than DM and WTSMG, even though they're both good aswell. The problem with polls like you mentioned is that the general public have a massive say, and 'proper' music fans (by that I mean people who really care about it) tend to make more informed and considered decisions. Most people who vote for Oasis I'd imagine have never heard London Calling in it's entirety. I don't mean you though. The Rolling Stone list was compiled by people who really know their music. As it happens, I'd have put the first 2 Oasis albums in my top 100, probably.

Anyway, obviously which is better is ultimately subjective, but I think it's fair to say The Clash are more varied and influential than Oasis.

Oh and with Joe's comment about Duffy he crossed that line into 'definitely just trying to wind people up'.

That's no need for them to make an entire career out of shoving their working class credentials down my throat. First two albums were okay, after that they were dire.

And the original issue was that even if guns n roses were good back in the day, they shouldnt have been headlining reading now. You basically said that you'd rather see a shit performance form someone big like guns than a great performance from someone small like Arcade Fire.

Oh and sure, whats not to love about Duffy? Another faux-sixties sounding album hanging onto the coattails of the equally atrocious Amy Winehouse. Definitely one of the albums of the last 30 years.

PS. That last bit was sarcasm, just in case you didn't notice.

I'd actually agree with the comment about the polls, however they still place highly on critics polls and you can't discount them entirely. After all there will be some 'proper' music fans who placed them highly. I'd still take any poll over that of the Rolling Stone one which favours extremly highly to older bands. How anybody can put forward that poll that has 10 Beatles albums in it (including Help!, A hard days night and let it be) and nothing by Primal Scream, Blur, Stone Roses and Arcade Fire and not consider it shit I don't know. Rolling Stone magazine has to be the worst publication going and I'd say they know shit about music but thats another rant.

As for The Clash been more influential than Oasis I'd disagree strongly. Oasis were the first band I properly got into and introduced me into music. From them I got into more similar bands and my musical collection grew strongly. There will be absolutly loads of people in a similar situation. The size that Oasis are or were in this country means that they will have been the first sound that people heard to get into rock and Indie music for absolutly thousands of people. I'm pretty sure that 99.9% of people will have heard of Oasis' music before that of say the Velvet Undergound, Marvin Gaye and Ramones when growing up in the last 20 years. Now of course when we go further into music we release that they probably weren't the best thing that ever happened to the business but without them I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't have delved further into other bands and been able to make this conclusion. Their influence on society is huge. Now when a bands making a record and list the influences that helped them with it, I can't see a lot saying Oasis for the reason as you said they weren't extremly varied, but I'm sure a lot will owe them the debt of making them want to pick up a guitar in the first place.
