Bands with female lead singers suck

They were bigger. But i agree they weren't NME headline material.

Big brother and the holding company (Janis Joplin)

Probably the most impressive female vocalist in rock History both in terms of voice and back catalogue.

The Mamas and the Papas were another exceptional band

Also the Velvet Underground's début is half fronted by a women albeit with a deep voice.

On the whole I'm not a fan of Women fronting rock bands I'm not sure if their vocals really suite the style especially since 60's with the music becoming less bluesy.

Womens vocals work much better in very floaty music, mellow dance music uses female vocalists far more than male. When you think of the amount of amazing female soul artists throughout the years and compare them against the amount of impressive female fronted rock bands the difference is staggering. I'm not sure if the same would apply to any other genre.

I really hate the idea of deliberately being leftfield but I prefer Nico when she went solo - Chelsea Girls is a brilliant album and she carved a niche for herself away from The Velvet Underground to warrant respect in her own right. The only reason she ended up being on The Velvet Underground's first album was because of Andy Warhol, and let's face it, the guy painted cans of soup and made 8 hour films of the Empire State Building. He wasn't a musician. Lou Reed and John Cale were - which is why they kicked Nico at the first chance they got. Nico was Andy's idea.

Nico's inclusion on that album was more or less a guest appearance - it'd be like saying Primal Scream are a great female fronted band because Kate Moss sang on 'Evil Heat' except Kate Moss hasn't thankfully released any solo albums.

and an entire album is different to an entire song. But no less, i am very happy to always hear a mention of the scream within the confines of a group discussion

Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Hole are two of my all time favourite bands, ditto Sonic Youth although Kim isn't always on vocals so they aren't strictly a female fronted band.

Big shouts to The Breeders, Metric, Throwing Muses, Slowdive, The Distillers, Juliette Lewis, My Bloody Valentine (in the same nature of SY), Rilo Kiley, Elastica.
