Primavera Sound 2011

Hi all,

We were at Primavera Sound 2010 last year - and had a brilliant time. Does anyone know when the first announcements will appear for next years festival? Also, we're heard that there's a fan vote for bands to play next year - does anyone know how you go about putting bands forward or voting? Thanks folks! :)

Typically they'll have something announced after Primavera Club is finished. Usually around early December but it will generally only be about 8 or 10 bands and not necessarily reflective of their big names. Last year was unusual in that they had Pixies and Pavemement announced earlier but I suspect that may have been a once off. Lineup doesn't really take shape until after February. I'm so annoyed I can't make it this year but if anyone knows of any decent equivalents (other than the 2 ATP festivals) I'd love to hear of them.

I don't know about equivalents but Way Out West in Gothenburg, Sweden and Oya in Oslo, Norway would be my bid. They both offer outdoor gigs in parks in the city center as well as club gigs at night.

2010 Line Up at Way Out West included: Beach House, Bear In Heaven, Broken Bells, Caribou, Chemical Brothers, Cymbals Eat Guitars, Die Antwoord, The Drums, Girls, Iggy & the Stooges, jj, Jonsi, Kanono no1, LCD Soundsystem, Local Natives, The Low Anthem, Lykke Li, M.I.A, Marina & the Diamonds, The National, Panda Bear, Pavement, The Radio Dept, Reflection Eternal feat Talib Kweli, Sleigh Bells, Surfer Blood, Wu Tang Clan and The xx.

Oya in Oslo offered a pretty similar line-up. Previous years have seen artists like Neil Young, Sonic Youth, Primal Scream, Kanye West, Sigur Ros, Fleet Foxes, The Flaming Lips, Okkervil River, Nas, Vampire Weekend, My Bloody Valentine and Wilco.

On the 19th of October at around 5pm the first ten bands of the line-up of the eleventh edition of the San Miguel Primavera Sound, which will take place next year in the Parc del Fòrum (26th, 27th and 28th May) and in the Poble Espanyol (25th and 29th May), will be announced. The members of the festival forum have chosen these first ten artists through a survey.

REDUCED PRICE TICKETS CAMPAIGN.

The sale of tickets for the San Miguel Primavera Sound 2011 will also start on Tuesday19th of October, once these first confirmations have been announced. The full festival ticket will cost 99 € (+ booking fee), until the first 1000 full festival tickets have been sold.

The official sales points are Codetickets, Servicaixa, PayPal, Seetickets UK, Fnac France and the CD Drome shops (further information about the sales points at www.primaverasound.com).

There are no age restrictions for the San Miguel Primavera Sound festival (apart from for some of the pre-festival concerts programmed in venues). The performances in the Poble Espanyol will have a limited capacity.

Hmmm, interesting! Guess that's the slot that was taken by Pavement last year sorted? Not really our thing, but it'll be interesting to see what else gets announced!

Sounding amazing! Can anyone who has been before tell me what the atmosphere at the festival is like? I get the impression it would be a bit more of an older, friendlier crowd than your average festival?

I was there last year and agree 100% with this. A good friendly crowd, didn't see any hassle. I chatted with people from all over the place: Holland, Spain, England etc. I got my tickets before this latest announcement, purely on the strength of last year.

Bands were great, sound quality generally very good (main stages were on different levels, so there was almost no sound bleed from one to the other). Only downsides: it was a bit crowded (hard to move around during Pixies, had to keep moving back during Pet Shop Boys, couldn't get down to second stage for Orbital (but could watch them from top of ampitheatre), and some bands on smaller stages were very crowded). Which also meant: big queues for food at times. Though not for alcohol: you buy vouchers in advance, which is a hassle but means that it takes about 5 seconds to get a beer :)

Infinite Jest: Yeah, I know a festival you like to attend and it doesn't get that crowded there. But we should keep it a secret I guess ;)

Can anyone who have visited Primavera make an estimation of how many bands it's possible to see per day? And I would probably mostly wanna attend sets at the bigger stages..

Are you allowed to bring your beer to the stages and all around the festival area or are the drinking activities restricted to bar areas?

I've got the impression that the stages are all outdoors, is that right or is there any indoor stage?

Heh, Hiya Olivedal 

You can bring your beer and food to any stage except the Auditorium. All stages have a bar area and all of them (I think) have at least one food place, even if it's just hot dogs. The choice of alcohol is very limited – good if you like drinking generic lager, basically.

There are four outdoor stages, one that is "outdoor" but has a high roof covering the audience area and open sides, and one indoors (the Auditorium, which is basically like a nice theatre. They have acts like Mazzy Star there – I imagine John Cale will play that stage).

Band timetables: they have big gaps between sets on each stage – a good hour or more. Last year they only had 4 bands, maybe 5 per day on the main stage. It's therefore possible to rush off and see another band in-between sets. Of course, if you're moving between the two main stages, everyone else will be trying to do the same thing; and if you're not, you have a long way to go. I'd say you could see everything on the main stage, and see a large chunk of 3 or 4 other bands' sets. But I suggest checking that link in my last post (I can't actually look at it at the moment as it's blocked at work)

It was especially crowded last year because of the anniversary and unique line up, so about 100,000 people came,

But usually it's not like that, I was also in PS09 and it wasn't crowded at all.

Really great festival, I hope I'll be able to go this year too. Last year was amazing, no other word to describe :O

About the time tables, I'd say you can see at least 8 shows per day.

But it also depends on how much you wanna see of every band. Some bands we stayed for the whole show, and some others we only wanted to "taste". So you definitely could see more.

There's not enough alcohol variety, so if you're willing to take the risk, bring your favorite drink and hide it on entrance.

Thanks for the info guys!

100 000 people sounds massive. But I get the impression that the venue only holds 35 000 visitors per day when I take a look at this press release (?): http://www.primaverasound.com/ps/?page=prensa&sec=comunicados&id=125&lang=en
