What's your point?

Radiohead in "play new album on tour" shocker.

Not sure what the ciriticism is? This isn't a festival. This is their tour for their new album. If the guy doesn't like the new album then that's fair enough, but you can't criticise them for playing it. They're still very much a fully active and creative recording band and people should realise that when they buy a ticket for it. And what's with the reviewer having a go for their stage presence? By his description, its pretty much what they've always been like live. You don't need to run around on stage like a chimp to be a good live band. Its all about the sound they create.

I'm going to see them this Monday, I'm quite excited by the setlist. Seen them loads of times before so looking forward to hearing a load of new stuff. I'll let you know what I think - perfectly willing to criticise if I don't think its up to scratch and a let down on previous live shows.

They're perfectly entitled to play their new stuff and people are perfectly entitled to criticise them for it.

The new album is unlistenable nonsense to my ears. Its not the type of music you play to a big crowd.

Their stage presence is the same its always been. Shite. A wobbly headed bollocks of a man.

well it is the type of music you play to a big crowd if they're the ones who bought it and liked it. If you don't like it then thats cool, its not for everyone's taste, and its taken me a bit of getting used to, but the truth is its become a popular album and people are paying money for them to tour it. People who want to see OK computer played in its entirety should have gone to see them 15 years ago.

I had put you down as a defender of a band playing their new stuff at their own shows, even if its a bit cack. Anyway, the albums only 8 songs long, and they're playing 24 songs at a show, still leaves plenty of space for other stuff.

(he's not the prettiest testicle in the world, but they've been doing that style show for 15 odd years now and its served them and their fans pretty darn well so far)

do girls have to be the target audience?

otherwise you could include the Sex Pistols......no?

or any number of Motown acts

I think young girls have to be the target market, initially anyway. Its why most of the music is nonsense. Its just one step above "1-2-3-4" playground stuff.

mmm...or is it that pretty young men don't have any credibility among males because they attract teenage girls, who might not be into the band for its music alone? (Or for the music at all?)

wiki names the Beatles as a prototype for boy bands. And that comparisons were made between the Beatles and the Bay City Rollers. :O

then which (male) bands aren't boy bands?

realistically, I'd say any that play their own instruments and don't dance on stage.

Would you class bands like My Chemical Romance and 30 Seconds to Mars as boy bands?

why are they any less a 'boy band' than the Beatles?

One of the immediate images that springs to mind whenever The Beatles are mentioned is that of hordes of girls screaming so hard that they fly through puberty and into young adulthood before you can say Love Me Do.

I've always considered them a boy band for this sort of reaction that they generated amongst (mainly) female fans. Now that may be largely due to their relative uniqueness at the time but it is still an enduring image and one that personifies them for me.

Wiki is - shockhorror - wrong. Neither the beatles nor the monkees were boy bands. The monkees were a manufactured band, that's all.

I can see a bit of what they mean. Boy bands have group members with distinct types, to maximise the bands sex appeal, each member can sing rather than having a front man, and their image is designed to appeal to young girls.

But today's boy bands play disposable pop music, the music seems to be an afterthought rather than the purpose of the band.

You can't accuse the Beatles of that. And I quite like the Monkees.

But there's still that commercialisation of them, in their films and TV series.

Though you could say the same for Elvis.

girls have been screaming at their idols for at least a couple of decades before... Sinatra?

categorising an act because of the reaction they make seems odd

I think it's more that their management markets them to appeal to a particular demographic. Something that we're now very aware of, and tend to devalue, courtesy of X Factor et al

absloutely

he looks so old, but so what, he is old. He looks more at home, and his voice sounds fine doing that kind ot material

I saw a clip (from the show or rehearsing) of him doing Spoonful the other day, and I was pleasantly surprised, especially at his voice

I love his smile... and he still does that jerking-up-of-his-elbow thing... :D

bless him... really

This one? Hadn't seen it. Cool.
