I saw The Skatalites at the weekend - proper legends, whose personnel were the heart of Jamaica's ska/reggae revolution .... even tho, as The Skatalites, they only existed for around 18 months the first time around in the 60s.

Except .... The Skatalites no longer have any of the originals touring with them. The last original who was playing with them last summer, Lester Sterling, was not on stage with them. :(

So now they're a reformed legendary band without any of the originals who made them those legends. It's a bit strange.

They're not going to be the last Jamaican band who do this, I think.

- The Wailers only have Aston Familyman Barret left playing with them, tho he now has one of his very many kids in the band playing drums.

- Black Uhuru, who I saw last year, only had Duckie Simpson as an original with them, and he was only on stage for a few songs.

It's an odd situation that makes me sad. I can't work out if I'd prefer to see a no-originals version of a legendary band or not. It's great to hear those classic songs of course, but.... ;)

Funnily enough just dug out this box set this morning for the car. Best tenner I ever spent! Lots of fun.

that's pretty much a Skatalites disc. There's only a few actual Skatalites tunes on there, tho most of the rest is by Skatalite members.

Which is why they're such legends, despite there not being a huge amount of actual Skatalites stuff from their 18 months of existence.

Saw a great legend last night - Steve Cropper, sharing a bill in Cardiff with The Animals.

For a white guy Cropper wrote an astonishing number of black soul hits including Knock on Wood and Dock of The Bay.

A great night with lots of stories between the songs. Steve's 74 now but still working. Put the right band with him and he'd blow Glasto away.

Very interesting excerpt on the death of Elvis from a new bio. He was on Michael Jackson quantities of drugs. More even.

during the seven and a half months preceding Elvis’s death, from January 1, 1977, to August 16, 1977, Dr. Nichopoulos had written prescriptions for him for at least 8,805 pills, tablets, vials, and injectables. Going back to January 1975, the count was 19,012.

:O
