Ed209
Yeah, the Vivaldi and the Holst are both fantastic. Seeing a full symphony smash them out really is something to behold. The "legends of music" thread can't go without a mention of the original rockstar - J.S. Bach. Born in the late 17th century, this dude threw out the rule book, fused a lot of different influences together and basically reinvented music. Generally considered by aficionado's to be the most influencial and quite probably the greatest composer of all time. The intricacies in his work are extraordinary when you try and play it. He was the Jimi Hendrix of his time. Basically, the dude fucking wailed!

grumpyhack
It used to be Elvis or Cliff and Beatles or Stones. But there some great bands seen at the time as 'pop' who've left a great legacy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wcKZoFRpZCI

Wooderson
The coda to "I Feel Much Better" sounds like proto-metal to my ears at least. It is a BANGER. What a 7" to be released?! One of the best of all time methinks.
Wooderson
The "C'mon!" at the start of Tin Soldier is glorious. But the "Ooomph!" in the middle is ever better. Other than the 3 flawless Beatles double A's from 1965/66/67 - is there a better 7" from the 1960s? I challenge anyone to not turn up "Tin Soldier" if it comes on the radio. Timeless. Wooderson
weeeeellll... there's a few... but not many "Strawberry Fields Forever" / "Penny Lane" "We Can Work It Out" / "Day Tripper" "Paperback Writer" / "Rain" "Tin Soldier" / "I Feel Much Better" "Wouldnt It Be Nice" / "God Only Knows" Obviously I'm missing a rake of them here - but as regards a 7" that you'd have to think twice which was the A and which was the B, the above list is pretty definitive. The Nal
Before that Beatles mid 60s run there were The Kinks. Razor blades into the front of the amp, year zero for hard rock and heavy metal. The opening riff to this never fails to get my foot tapping and my hand reaching for the volume dial. All the way to 11. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBtQnTzO6kE&feature=related
The Nal
"Strawberry Fields Forever" / "Penny Lane" "We Can Work It Out" / "Day Tripper" "Paperback Writer" / "Rain" "Tin Soldier" / "I Feel Much Better" "Wouldnt It Be Nice" / "God Only Knows" Ill add (although not always double A Sides) His Bobness: The Times They Are a Changin Maggies Farm Subterranean Homesick Blues Like a Rolling Stone Positively 4th Street Also, Dylan released Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 and Blonde on Blonde in the space of 15 months. Astonishing stuff. The Stones: Not Fade Away Little Red Rooster Last Time Satisfaction Get Off My Cloud Paint It Black All released (including others) within two years of each other. The Stones pre Beggars Banquet output is criminally underrated.
Wooderson
Don't Worry Baby is my favourite Beach Boys song Tony. It is devine. What an experience it mustve been to bring that small square home from the record store, place it on the turntable and watch that vinyl spin. Sorcerers Apprentice stuff! I'd say manys the 14 year old had that mind absolutely BLOWN by it. By comparison I remember getting a rush the first time I heard something like "Night Train" when i was 11 or 12. Those experiences are crystalised in your head and absorb other elements like your surroundings or feelings from the time. The fact that music makes memories better is basically what im getting at! Other than Get Around/Worry Baby the only one that compares is Honky Tonk/Cant Always Get IMO mate. Sorry Ollsie - all the ones you reference are superb I'm sure but I'm kinda specifically talking about a single piece of wax.

The Nal
of course... Hey Joe/Stone Free (dropped the bomb there!) Purple Haze/51st Anniversary Wind Cries Mary/Highway Chile his first 3!! astonishing Stone Free is a great "leaving work on Friday evening" tune. Wooderson
They're all singles! Sure I realise that but I was talking about 7" singles where both sides were of exemplary quality. Granted Elvis put out "Hound Dog" b/w "Don't Be Cruel" but he didnt do it wilfully. I'm kinda getting at the Beatles here with their most-muscular heres a double whammy for your stereo singles policy from late 65 onwards. Chief, clearly "River Deep - Mountain High" is an absolute titan of a single from the 60's and the match of anything we've mentioned today - but it's bside is something called "I'll Keep You Happy" which isnt comparable. As a result it don't make my lisht! The aforementioned "Hey Joe"/"Stone Free" fits the bill perfick, however. Stone Free sounds like Public Enemy FFS.
