Legends of Music

The way we're nattering about the "Double A side" / "b side" (both concepts are more or less extinct) could be seen as a preview of how people might talk about albums in 20 years time. The tape cassette and then the compact disc killed the bside just like itunes has more or less killed the album. A song is a song of course - but for a music geek it will always have added value from context. Was it the first or last song on a classic record? Or was it an unloved bside that only gained mass appeal at a later stage...

Sure I realise that but I was talking about 7" singles where both sides were of exemplary quality. Granted Elvis put out "Hound Dog" b/w "Don't Be Cruel" but he didnt do it wilfully. I'm kinda getting at the Beatles here with their most-muscular heres a double whammy for your stereo singles policy from late 65 onwards.

Chief, clearly "River Deep - Mountain High" is an absolute titan of a single from the 60's and the match of anything we've mentioned today - but it's bside is something called "I'll Keep You Happy" which isnt comparable. As a result it don't make my lisht!

The aforementioned "Hey Joe"/"Stone Free" fits the bill perfick, however. Stone Free sounds like Public Enemy FFS.

Ah ok get ya.

I've got mixed feelings about tribute bands (and don't want to start another whole discussion about that issue) but one band I highly recommend is Limehouse Lizzy who do the memory of Mr Lynott proud.

Philo died today 26 years ago.

I met Phil and had a drink with him in about 1983 at a Lizzy show at Portsmouth Guildhall... needless to say, the man was pissed.

I met him cos I was doing my normal thing back then, of blagging my way into shows by meeting the band and getting onto the guest list .... and Phil was the only person who promised he'd put me on the list but didn't, the git. So I didn't get to see Lizzy that night. :(

I did however get to see the last British show he did, at Reading Festival (was it '85?).

Heroin addicts are notoriously unreliable.

The last ever Lizzy show was Reading '83. Not sure if Philo played there in 85 though.

He played with a band called Grand Slam after Lizzy (who my brother now plays for), but they didn't do much. Couldn't really get a deal due to his drug habit. He was quite erratic then not surprisingly.

Rumours of a Phil Lynott movie in the works. Although the band stopped the last attempt to make one as it focused on drugs too much and was full of lies. Good to see they haven't sold him out. But I wouldn't expect anything else from Brian Downey. A class act.

Fucking great drummer too.

I see the most excellent Mr David Robert Jones gets his bus pass and pension card today then :P

Couldn't make me mind up which d@mn fine vid of his to post but as there's already the rather bl**dy good '73 TOTP vid a few posts up I decided it just had to be his surprise guest appearance at RAH in 2006 simply cos I was there to see him in the flesh plus I reckon that the track could almost have been written for him in any case TBH !
