Happy Birthday!! (Bowie reads Efests right?).

Probably not but on Sunday I watched Labyrinth and the Best of Bowie dvd round at a mates house who loves him almost as much as I do. I also raised a glass of Sailor Jerrys to him at midnight on Saturday night.

I had no idea until the day that it was also Elvis' birthday too - and my friend Peter's lol.

New Leonard Cohen album out.

LC has to be one of my all time Glasto moments.

Was one of my worst Glastonbury moments. Was tripping balls on shrooms, started to panic I had taken too many. LC playing and was sending me into a very dark place. By the end of the gig I was in a ball on the ground with my big sister looking after me

I was 27 at the time

:D

Been going way back to the start recently.

Outstanding. Doesn't really sound related to any European influence. As close to the original African blues as you can hear on record.

And what a voice, and what a guitar player.

Turns out my Granny was right. The old songs are the best.

Singer songwriter Ralph McTell took his second name as a nod to Blind Willie McTell.

Ralph was/is a superb singer songwriter and guitarist but, sadly, is always saddled with 'that song.'

This is one of my favourite McTell songs based on the short novel Siddhartha by Herman Hesse, which I highly recommend as a great read.

Neil Young has posted a nice 37 minute jam from his recent album sessions (I presume) online. Dirty, dirty sounding stuff. New album due out soon. AND hes back with Crazy Horse!

:D

Edit - The Jam session actually turns into a mean version of Cortez the Killer after 20 odd minutes.

Fantastic stuff. I read over on one of the Shakey fansites that an Alt version of 'Fuckin' Up' is also included in the jam.

Hopefully album details and a tour get announced soon. Would do anything to see Neil again, Especially with The Horse!

Didnt hear that. Turns into Cortez after about 24 minutes but theres no singing until then.

Hes just handed the new album to the record company so announcement due soon!

the last few times I've seen Neil, the best shows were when Crazy Horse weren't backing him

just sayin'.....

Never seen him with the Horse. Ive only seen him with the band he had around Glasto. Looking forward to it. IF he tours here. He didnt tour the solo album here which was annoying. Some of the setlists were great.

a future legend....?

Could be. Hes in a "supergroup" called Black Country Communion with Jason Bonham and Glenn Hughes. I have their first album, quite good but music for musicians really. Rocking in parts mind you. Bonamassa writes all the stuff.

Hughes can still sing though! Fucking hell.

ermm ... the guitarist in that vid I posted is the teenage son of someone I know.

The backing track is one he created himself. The guitar playing you see is him playing live along to that backing track.

He's yet to venture out of his bedroom to playing live. He should get on with it.

Ah ok! Saw the name and presumed.... havent had my coffee yet lads!

Sounds like my brother. Guitarists that good seem to think someone is going to walk into their room and offer them a deal.

I saw Joe a couple of years ago... to be honest, I don't see what the fuss is about. He's pretty good, but not great (imo)

Think hes well respected because he writes a lot. He young enough too, early 30s.

Makes a nice change to "amazing guitarists" downstroking on the same chord over and over thinking they're in The Strokes. Wilko Johnson they are not. Or one of The Inmates!

trouble is, there are hundreds, if not thousands of pretty amazing guitarists out there.... not sure how a musician starts out these days

Writing and playing your own stuff. Goes for any form of musician. Its never changed. You know that more than me Tonyo. Sitting in your bedroom uploading clips of Radiohead covers to Myspace isn't going to get anyone anywhere. Either will Twitter, Facebook, Youtube etc. Theres no craft, no learning of the business etc. X Factor and the like makes people think they can become famous in 5 minutes. And they can I suppose, but it rarely lasts.

A mate of mines ex was doing quite well as a singer in her early 20s. Good looking girl, singing a bit of jazz, learning how to sing properly, (she had a good voice but couldn't "sing" yet) getting dates in small clubs, picking up a bit of a following week after week, learning piano, educating herself with the standards (Ella, Billie etc) starting to write, improving in general etc.

Then she went on XFactor at the suggestion of a mate (who was in a popular Irish band at the time) but against the strong protests of myself, which weren't appreciated! She got to the last 7 I think, got a bit of PR from Sharon after at the MTV awards or something (Ozzy looked up her dress in a sort of staged PR shot) and then...... nothing happened. Shes in a girl band now of some sort living in London. That'll be that for her.

People don't realise they have to play live. As Keith Richards said years ago "Any band who don't play live are only half a band".

Sadly, theres almost disdain from people now when they hear a band has been around and playing live for more than 6 months and haven't "made it". They must be shit right? Thats how quickly people are pushed into the public arena these days. The result is that we're left with bands who are massively out of their depth, like the Arctic Monkeys, who were only a decent club band at the time, headlining Glastonbury.

Sharon Osbourne has (apparently) fired Bill Ward from Black Sabbath. <_< Although he may have left or he may just not have signed the contract, effectively never rejoined, and the others are continuing without him.

Either way hes not there.

Have tickets been on sale for their gigs? Festivals and stuff? People looking for a "full Black Sabbath" reunion wont be happy.

Including me.

Just when you think they've gotten their act together, its all gone a bit Spinal Tap. They'll have Stumpy Joe Childs on drums now.

Oh deary me. That could cause Download some serious problems, although the implications might fall onto the band themselves. What are they doing about Iommi? He must be having to concentrate on getting better, imagine there's a definite possibility he might not be able to do it either, so we're down to Ozzy and Butler + whoever
