Spider

When my daughters were little they used to be terrified of spiders. One day one of them found a huge spider in the bath and screamed.

"Oh that's my pet spider Boris" I explained. "He's lovely but it's time for his walk." So I picked him up and put him outside on the windowsill.

Ever since then spiders have been known is our family as Borises and the girls, now grown up are no longer afraid of them.

Water

I have to share a story prompted by this.

My mate Dave plays in a blues band in Dorset and they were doing a gig near Lyme Regis shortly before Christmas a couple of years ago. We'd gone down to spend the weekend with him and we went along to the gig in a fairly rough and ready pub. Halfway through the set there was a commotion at the door and people started rushing out of the pub. The bar emptied but Dave and his band kept on playing untl eventually the only people left were the band, Dave's wife and Mrs Grumpyhack and I.

There didn't seem much point in continuing so the band stopped and we all went outside to see what the commotion was.

It turned out that the 60ft high Christmas Tree in the middle of the market square car park outside was on fire. Everyone had gone outside to shift their cars to safety.

I realised there was only one car left, parked right next to the blazing tree - mine. The fire brigade had arrived and were about to drench everything and I had to push past them to get into my car, now next to a towering inferno, and drive it to safety.

The band couldn't match the entertainment of watching a blazing 60 ft high Christmas tree, which had pulled a huge crowd, and the gig sort of fizzled out.

But the point of all this is that the song they were playing as the pub emptied was Smoke on The Water.
