eFestivals
Gregory Isaacs died the other day. He played at the Big Chill this summer, and I very nearly went because he was playing, but didn't in the end. Now I can't see him. (I might have seen him at Reggae Sunsplash at Selhurst Park in the mid-eighties, but I can't remember who was on the bill and there's no accurate info I've found on the net [anything I do find seems to be contradicted by something else] ... either Gregory Isaacs played tho, or Dennis Brown did [or perhaps even both] - I always get those two muddled for some reason.) I did get to add Solomon Burke to my seen-list before he pegged it. Just about. The aging acts are slowly dying off. Who do you JUST HAVE TO SEE before they die? eFestivals
By the way Neil, heres a vid of Gregory Isaacs at that Sunsplash Festival in 1984. Problem is, if you google, all the stuff about Sunsplashes in London conflicts - so much so that I find it impossible to know if any of it is true. First off, was it '84 or '85, or both? I don't know, and I was there - one year defo, and possibly two. But there might not have even been two (not at Selhurst Park, anyhow. I only went to Selhurst Park, I remember that much). And then there's the line-ups. The only act I can remember I definitely I saw is Third World, and googling again tells me lots of different things. The only real memory I have of it is this: looking across the crowd and seeing huge 'smoke signals' going up everywhere all the time, in a crowd that was essentially surrounded by a line of old bill - bear in mind, this was 1985!! They'd nick you and take you to court for a bit of weed too small to smoke in those days, there was none of this cautioning lark or a widespread idea across society that weed is less harmful than alcohol; 'weed is a drug just like smack' was the view of the day. Perhaps that's why I can't remember anything. Edited October 27, 2010 by eFestivals
The Nal
Interesting list, mainly cos I`ve seen most of em. Thing is--you gotta be careful because theres a good chance after seein em--you come away disappointed. Jerry Lee Lewis ,couple of years ago-- was carried on stage in a wheelchair...played (and missed) a few bars of Great Balls...and was carted off again. Chuck Berry... he came on--and I`m not kiddin..played 1st 3 numbers without his guitar plugged in!!! He didnt know! His son was bailin him out. Jimmy Page.. well..maybe you go with the wrong mind-set thinking its gonna be like the old days, which of course it isnt. Pink Floyd..well as a group--great. As individuals...whats the point? Friend went to see BB King just last week and said he just sat on his BIG ASS and played a note every 3rd song... course he is about 106yrs old. Little Richard as you well know died over 10yrs ago but like you I`d like to have a rake round in Dot Cottons billows before she settles down to die! Only thing I would say about seeing the people above is.. I have seen em. Den And they are on my CV. eFestivals
Never heard of it before today so have been googling. 100,000 people!! It was in Selhurst Park in 84 and 85. Isaacs played both years and then it was moved indoors in 86 to Wembley Arena due to the madness you mentioned. 84 was opened by the Skatalites (their return, they also backed Prince Buster that year) and in 1985, Sugar Minott, Gregory Isaacs and Ini Kamoze played and were backed by the Taxi Gang. Sounded like a hoot! My few memories of it are good, and that's always a good sign. If you google some more, you'll find stuff that says it was only held in London once ever (in both '84 & '85), and stuff that says there was one at Selhurst Park and another indoors somewhere (I forget where, but I'd guess it's what you have, Wembley Arena [or was it still the Empire Pool back then?]), and other stuff that says two outdoor (with or without one indoor) but one at Selhurst Park and the other in Crystal Palace Park (or some park in Crystal Palace or nearby). I gave up trying to make sense of it. Edited October 27, 2010 by eFestivals
worm
Robert Smith. I'm pretty sure that The Cure are the only band left going of my favourites who I've not seen live.

Ed209
yup, with you on Bowie. I had this with Bob Dylan for a long time. However when I did finally get to see him last year, I spent the whole gig wishing he had already died.

t8yman
No one really, Ive seen most people I really want to see. Most people I want to see split up rather than die. Gutted I missed Bill Hicks, my best friend saw him in a tiny theater in my home town, and I didnt even know who he was at the time so passed up on a ticket. He was dead within a year IIRC. But on the other hand, I got to see Richard Pryor just before he died. I would love to see Floyd reformed, Led Zep, and I would definitely like to see the Stones, even though I'm not a massive fan. But the first two are about as likely as I dont know what.
