The play count on last.fm or similar sites is completely irrelevant though. As you say it's Worldwide, I'm pretty sure that it'll skew much younger than the Glastonbury average as well.

And it's not a case of Pulp being so "massive" they could "only" headline the Pyramid. Nobody except you has used language like that. Pulp are culturally and musically important in terms of both Britain and Glastonbury, and they're loved by a large chunk of the Glastonbury crowd. What more qualifications to headline are needed? Not saying they definitely would, but there's a legitimate case for it - every bit as much as The Verve, Arctic Monkeys, Kings of Leon and many other recent headliners had.

If you check out Wikipedia it seems that the whole V96 idea was Jarvis's

That's completely wrong (tho Jarvis' desire to do a gig like that might have been what caused him to be involved).

Branson thought he was so cool that the only thing that could make him cooler would be a festival.

Having made enquiries about 'acquiring' an existing festival (I'll let you decide which one. Or google) and been laughed at, he decided to do his own.

Pulp could definitely hold a headline slot on the Pyramid but don't line up with the "biggest bands on the world" claim so i cannot see them headlining. However, i also don't think they have egos that prevent them appearing elsewhere on the bill, either lower on the pyramid, or elsewhere on site.

They are definitely a "You know more of their tunes than you think" band. I thought they were as big as Blur and Oasis at the time but just never got the same credit - but that was probably just my perspective because they were my favourite of the 3. My only worry would be whether they would actually do a greatest hits set - Jarvis can be a bit Morrisey like contrary in this regard. I hope so though.

I'd just be happy to see Pulp again, I don't care where on the bill - where they turn up is where i'll be. :D

I'm a massive Pulp fan, but let's face it all three of those acts are bigger than Pulp are and will ever be, so yeah, there is no reason why they'd play second fiddle to Pulp.

I've never seen it likely that Prince will play, it's looking even less so now we've Pulp or Take That in the mix (and that American act Michael's been after for years too !).

I am excited beyond words for this, its like my wildest dream come true.

I think there is no doubt about their ability to headline the Pyramid stage - their first headlining slot is the kind of marvellous story that makes Glasto the magical place it is, their back-catalogue spans 3 decades now (although I may well be holding my breath for a while for anything from It or Seperations I should think, more's the pity) and Jarvis is one of the most iconic and enigmatic figures of the brit-pop era, with a massive contemporary following from different generations. He packed out John Peel in 2009 solo, I think they could pack out the Pyramid too

I honestly think there is no way they would not play Glastonbury when you take into consideration the press release statement Jarvis put out this time last year when the rumours were flying round. He has massive connections with the place, goes pretty much every year (all of my friends have managed to meet him round the Park area at some point or another in the past couple of years which makes me very envious - he even stopped for a piccy once!) and he took Albert in 2009 and stayed in the tipi fields (its not like I stalk him or anything)

His'n'Hers, Different Class (POP FACT the family on the front cover are from Middlesbrough, my home town, and this makes me very proud) and This is Hardcore are proper soundtracks to so many people's lives and I think the draw will be momentous. If they do play, I for one will be on the barrier at the Pyramid for 8 o'clock in the morning armed with a she-pee, pissing bottles and bag of wine to keep me company!

They've already promised the hits in their press release. And all the times I saw them, they always did most of them!

True that Pulp aren't bigger than those acts, but I don't think they will play second fiddle to them. I'd hazard a guess that if they are play Glasto (which I think they will), then ME will have had them in discussions for a while with the intention of them to headline. They won't be a late name to the mix and there isn't place for them. If they've been in discussions for a while than I'd guess that those names won't be at Glasto next year. They're only rumours after all. I know Pulp are only a rumour too, but just because they're a rumour that have only just come about, doesn't mean that they are a name thats only just come about to Michael and Emily. And when they've become a name to consider, I'd think they'd be a name to consider to headline. I'd guess they wouldn't ask them to play with the intention of getting a huge name above them.

While I'm personally leaning towards Pulp not headlining, I don't see that comment by the Eavii as ruling Pulp out - that's placing too much faith in people who are essentially salespeople. When can you ever trust the word of a salesperson? ;)

Of course, the Eavii are perhaps not your average salespeople, but they still have a product that they want you to buy, and they're never going to say "we have three of the shittest bands in the world for you" even if that's what they genuinely thought.

I wouldn't lump Pulp in with the "biggest bands in the world", but perhaps the Eavii do - either genuinely, or as a sales pitch.

Do you think maybe the Other Stage then Neil? I can't imagine them not headlining one of the two main stages

My first thought was other stage headline, but after consideration I think the Pyramid is much more likely - they're too mainstream an act to be anywhere else really, I reckon.

Whether they'd headline I don't know, but I'd say that overall they're too big and retro-popular for that to be completely ruled out.

Thanks to people who responded re: the greatest hits set. That'll be great then.

Black cockerel - I did see them once when they managed to do virtually nothing i had heard of for the entire set, to the extent that when they threw in Common People at the end it felt like an insult. I left that gig not so much pissed off at their wilful anti-commercialism, but at the way they chucked the one hit on at the end as if throwing some crumbs to us plebs that didn't get the rest of it! However - like you - most times I saw them they were fantastic so I just hope for that again.

To be honest - after my favourite headliners of the last 3 Glastonburies - Jay Z, Blur, & Stevie Wonder, I couldn't think of anything else at that level for me - but Pulp would be it!
