I'm really surprised that Midlake aren't headlining as they are tailor-made for a headline in the Garden. The two realistic possibilities are that they headline the Big Top or are last but one on the Garden Stage. If the latter, that would still be fantastic. I remember the atmosphere for Okkervil River in that position before Fleet Foxes and it was like a headlining slot!

My guess would be second on Garden (as, were I in charge, would be the Walkmen, with Gruff Rhys and The Fall headlining Big Top). Think it'd work better in those surroundings, the only drawback being that's where they were last time.

I don't understand how EOTR managed to get Midlake as an exclusive act without them headlining. If I were Midlake I wouldn't have signed that deal.

EOTR does seem to be a festival that bands enjoy not only playing at, but then staying on as punters. It wouldn't surprise me if Midlake play an afternoon set on a glorious sunny (here's hoping) afternoon, and then relax and enjoy

I'll be most surprised if they don't show up as John Grant's backing band as well. For his main set and for his secret late night Tipi set as well.

Saw Midlake supported by John Grant in November and JG was essentially solo with just Evan Jacob (Midlake's keyboard player) as accompaniment (they were fantastic, btw). JG joined Midlake for a Czars track as one of the encores.

Then at Latitude last year where they both played, JG had his own separate band on the main stage. So although possible, I reckon the odds are against a full set of John Grant and his backing band, Midlake.

Shame, mind...

Have to say, unless they raise the stage by at least a foot, can't summon up that much anticipation for Tipi sets. Now that everyone's taken to standing (at least for any 'name' act), it's become the worst stage for visibility. The other three are brilliant, vis-wise..

Become? It's a damn sight better visibility-wise than the Tipi of 2009, which about 3 people could get a decent view in. And this brings back the whole argument about sitting (i.e. a smaller number of people, but all able to get a view) vs standing (a less good view, but more people able to get into the tent and get a decent bit of sound and atmosphere) which I guess will rage on until they decide to suspend the Tipi stage in mid-air. Then we'd all complain of bad necks.
