they have to make certain choices which by default take away other choices. They have to decide what A levels they're going to aim for, which will go on to inform their decision of what degree they might take

this is how the system is designed, and how it functions. Secondary education's prime aim is to prepare the students for University... nothing else

Come on children - this is getting silly. It was entertaining for a while but if people want to challenge or hurl abuse shouldn't the place should be personal messages not the open forum - unless of course you are already exchanging personal messages that are even more vitriolic.

We do that anyway with degrees Phil.

I think she means extend the 'free' sense of education passed 18 years of age. I'd like to see the age at which you can leave education lowered too so that we can recoup funding for those that want it. This is also why I feel that tackling lack of opportunity and identification of intellectual needs at the lower level is of primary importance.

I don't like to see education priced out of people's options, whichever level they might want to attain. I'd like to see education more accessible right up to at least Master's level.Maybe free education is too idealistic, but there shouldn't be financial barriers in the way of education.

16-18 is a strange age to be expected to knuckle down and plan for your future though. Raging hormones and all that.

I left school at 16, and that decision altered my life. It's strange to think that I'd never have met my husband under currect laws.

You can apply that to every social law. In fact, you can apply it to every single conditional variable that leads to a choice, whether social, psychological, physical and/or human. Fate I mean, not particularly your husband.

You're right about 16 to 18, but what do we do? Have people attend education at later stages of live?

my sister more or less dropped out of education by the time she was 14. She kept up the pretence as long as was necessary - being dropped off at the gates, walking towards the school until our mum had gone, then turned around and wandered around town for the day - and by the time she was 20 she had an idea of what she might want to do with her life, and has done very well. The options are much more limited today
