Baby/Children's Books

My bestest friend for forever is not long off about to drop her first ever sproglet and for once I actually genuinely want to be involved in the baby's life.....all my other friends with babies have drifted away but I'm not going to lose my best one :(

So, I asked her what present she would like for the birth of her bundle of joy and she has asked for books (not surprising given it being from me). I have got a few ideas but I want to get her a bundle of books, not only for teeny tiny fingers but also for as he/she (we do not know the sex) gets a little bit older.

Does anyone have any recommendations/suggestions??

I'm also looking for books for her and her partner, as they both like reading and would appreciate something for them too :)

In my play basket thus far I have:

Baby's Very First Bath Book: Animals

Baby's Very First Flashcards

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

The Gruffalo

Spot Little Library

Love In The Time Of Colic

:)

A good one for reading to the baby when it is a bit too young to really understand is AA Milne's When We Were Very Young . lots of lovely poems that mums and dads like too.

My nephew loves his new books we got him last week which are

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Snail-Whale-Julia-Donaldson/dp/0230013880/ref=sr_1_5?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1296650408&sr=1-5

and a book called more more more about a whale who is bored of eating krill - currently two for one in Waterstones.

He also loves http://www.amazon.com/Shark-Park-Usborne-Phonics-Readers/dp/0794515096/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1296650598&sr=1-1

He shouts there's a shark in the park at the top of his voice and has a brilliant time.

Avoid Noisy, Touchy, Feely Santa just for the title!

We actually stocked it where I worked recently. Its a book with one of those noise packs on it but seriously? How did they get away with that title???

For a couple of years time you need the classics such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Elmer, We're Going on a Bear Hunt, Each Peach Pear Plum, etc At work we also have The Tiger Who Came for Tea, Room on the Broom, Guess How Much I Love You, Peace at Last, Whatever Next and Monkey Puzzle which all usually feature in the top 30 or so pre-school children's books. And big books of nursery rhymes and fairy tales are always good!

typing one handed so excuse typos:

we have some of the thst's not my... books, hungry caterpillar (her room is decorated with wall stickers from the story) but i would have loved a book of nursery rooms as neither of us can remember many all the way through!

tell her to sleeeeeeeeeeeep - Ro is 7 weeks tomorrow and last night was the first night i'd come close to describing as a "good" night's sleep ie. only one wake up between 11pm and 8am!

Y`know the best book I ever got for the kids?..and I`ve been using it for 25years now.

"The Grate Deninis Book of Silli Stories and Even Sillier Cartoones"

It didnt cost a penny--but they`ve all loved it of the years.

I do so love books..and of course books for children have changed quite dramatically over the years haven`t they. Aren`t they horrendously expensive though. I raid the charity shops like blazes for books me.

But going back to my book....I`ve found that any story I tell King Larmer for instance... I include him in it..like err... OUAT, there was a town full of rats that had grown REALLY REAALY big..and had begun to eat little children. The King had no idea what to do. He sent for all the magicians to sort out the rats..but none of them could do a single thing.

One day the KIng was very sad, because a giant rat had got into the palace and ATE up his little baby boy.

"And you know what happened then Larmer?"

"No...Dad... what happened"

"Well, a new boy came into town--nobody had seen him before.Do you know what his name was?"

"No!"

"His name was Larmer.... and he told the King he would get rid of ALL the baby eating rats!"

(his eyes always go wider at this point)

"Will he use Mams blue juice* Dad?"

"No, no Larmer.. he didn`t have that back in those days... he used a trumpet (fingers to mouth and sound a trumpet)"

"Like the Piled Piper of Hamlet Dad?"

"Aye.. something like that kidder,aye".."and so he went round the town blowing on his magic trumpet..gooo-on Lar--do the trumpet..and y`know what?"

"Did all the rats follow him Dad? Why didn`t they eat HIM then?"

"Never mind about that now Larmer... anyway, he kept blowing his trumpet (trumpet sound) and MILLIONS AND MILLIONS of rats..How many Larmer?"

"More than one million twenty five hundred four Dad?"

"Aye, an tha. Well, he thought whats he gonna do with all these flippin rats see...

("Den...yer tea`s ready!!.....)

.... what do you think he did son?"

"Did he send them all into space on a rocket with no food in Dad?"

"Thats EXACTLY what he did son! Did you like that story?"

"Yes! Tell me the one where that girl get her eye put out by a catapult Dad...PLEEEEASE!"

"I`ll go an have me tea son..and come back up.OK? Good boy... mmmmmmnnn I love you son. Och the noo..."

"Nicht the Nicht...bye Dad"

Oh.. I got carried away there.....what we on about again?

Books--aye..yer cant have enough books imo.

den

*blue juice = phenobarbitol, whats used to put the animals to sleep :)
