Sky/Freeview/Ariel question...

At a previous house..picture was shite--all snowy. Got a Freeview box off the market. The dish thing was just hanging loosely over a fence. Anyway--after much fiddling about--I managed to get a picture etc.Everything was fine.

Next house had no dish...but an ordinary ariel. Simply plugged the lot in..BINGO.

This house (as I think I posted last year) doesn`t have an ariel, although the connections are all in the room.

But, it has a dish and all the cables for sky..so I got a sky box off the market and thats all working fine. I dont subscribe to any of the posh things--but get the usual mainstream stuff.

However--Freeview is better--and I am so missing When the Byoat Comes In on Yesterday and Quest.

So--my question is... should I be able to use the dish as an "ordinary" ariel..like I did at the first house above.

Take the silver connection off and put a co-axial socket on etc. Does the sky dish act as an ariel as such?

There are 2 connectors on the sky lead..one i believe is for the phone or something? Is that right?

Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

Can't help you with the aerial info i'm afraid but i have to let you know the sad news that the run of 'when the boat comes in' has finished. After Jack Ford was done with his wheeling and dealing, Yesterday showed 'the onedin line' and now they're working their way south as it's 'shine on harvey moon' that's getting an airing.

My link

Here's a forum discussion about using a dish to get freeview - it seems that you can use it although it's just the same as attaching the cable to any large lump of metal and getting a signal through that (or constructing a pyramid of wire coat hangers as an aerial as I had in the back of the black and white portable i had in my bedroom as a nipper in the early 1980's).

lawks alive!!

:D

isn't that what I said...?

:D

always worth a shot..

remember though, if the signal isn't strong enough, boosting a week signal won't help

If you have a sat dish setup that works with your existing Sky box and it is actually the freeview channels you want, as opposed the free sky channels, why not sell the freeview and Sky digiboxes and buy a FreeSAT box?

No messing around with aerials, the dish is already setup - just unplug the Sky one and plug in the Freesat one ... £40 quid new off amazon, even cheaper of the bay.

The 'digital switchover' comes to the Tyne Tees tellybroadcast region in 2012 - at that time, if you fall in a certain group (e.g. a pensioner over 75, a person in receipt of DLA, or attendance allowance, or constant attendance allowance or mobility supplement, someone who is registered blind or has lived in a care home for six months) you can sign-up for the 'digital switchover scheme' and get yourself freesat for crumpence. So, if you know an elderly blind person who can come live with you for a few weeks or, alternatively, register 'den towers' as a care home then you take advantage of this offer. I know it's a way off yet but The Hitler channel Yesterday will still be showing when the boat comes in, auschwitz, catherine cookson etc. on repeat in 2012 so you won't have missed anything.

Maybe I could contact the Blue that Raul Moat shot... he could visit me on compassionate grounds and I could set up a Pet Petting service to give him some tactile stimulation eh?

Or better still-- I will poke your f**kin eyes out and tie yer to me washin pole.

I`ll do owt me to get FreeSat!

Eeh Den, you'll never get a signal off me, i've not got enough metal fillings in me gnashers - unless you've got a very tall washing pole. Mind, tied there to a washing line I could be like that bloke from greek mythology...

"Prometheus made the humans out of clay and stole the fire from Zeus and brought it to them. He also gave them the best part of the sacrifice, which upset the gods so much that he was tied to a rock in Caucasus, the edge of he world, where an eagle came to pick his liver each day."

Except, instead of the edge of the world, it would be the Tyne Tees television area (I'm saying nowt), and instead of an eagle picking my liver, it would be the local gadgies rifling through my pockets and dogs urinating up my legs!
