Blink 182 cant sell out arenas either and they headlined the festival. It should also be noted that while blink 182 and mcr arena tours are not sold out, mcr have a far bigger band as the main support act.

I suspect Arcade fire would also struggle to sell out an arena tour.

Don't think MCR will be at Download for the sole reasons that Copping's already said they're not playing & they'd be up against Pendulum, who they'd share a target audience with.

Selling out arena's doesn't mean sh!t. Arcade Fire sell out arena's & are playing Hyde Park yet their crowd at Leeds last year was the smallest headline crowd I've seen at any festival, ever. The peeps who'll buy a gig ticket doesn't always translate to a festival audience.

Is there any chance that it could be NME? I guess not really 1.2 million copies of there recent album sold! Bummer. The album flopped in the UK charts at no. 14 and the "emo scene" is dead and they haven't successfully reinvented themselves (thats the problem with scenes) so maybe they are subbing or NME. I'm expecting a tiny crowd and jeering/bottling from the crowd.

In my eyes they don't deserve the slot, which now looks likely. Album sales are not everything and they only really have a few hits, a fan base of teenage girls and Its not the original line-up (just thought I would make the point as people care so much about that sort of thing with other bands)

I'm not going this year anyway, the city of amsterdam is calling my name. I'll be at 2000trees as well

If Arcade Fire played this year, the crowd would be a lot bigger, NME headliner dependent. AF hadn't released The Suburbs yet when the headlined at R+L. Their profile, through that and performances at the Grammys and Brits and being all over Radio1, has massively increased. AF wouldn't have sold out an arena tour in August last year, but they can now.

Its obvious that mcr will headline. They may not be a mega band like metallica, blur, kings of leon etc but they compare favourably in popularity with blink, Razorlight and franz. I remember the last few year people have argued that the likes of arctic monkeys and blink will sub for a bigger band and they always end up headlining.

I personally have absolutely no grasp on how popular MCR are, but as long as it goes a long with a strong undercard/tent line-up then if there's a dearth of genuine headline bands then why not bump up a sub-headline level band that have done their time on the circuit and give them a shot. It sort of happened with Arcade Fire last year and hopefully the same will happen with QOTSA next year when their new album is out.

Yes but that just goes to show where blink 182 lie in comparison to other headliners. The biggest bands like foos, green day, oasis, blur, kol etc do arena tours and a few days later you will struggle to get a seated ticket never mind a standing one. In terms of popularity blink 182 are in the bottom half of recent headliners just as mcr are. Doesnt mean they dont deserve the slot, fact is the huge bands who have a pedigree of big selling albums, tours and festival headline slots cost a lot of money.
