airds
Yes another one lets not dicuss the music. And yes some people do go for the music, it is after all a a major part of the festival for alot of people. so why don't you stfu? Its a forum about music festivals where people are going to discuss which bands they dislike and like.
russycarps
I think you're dramatically overestimating Arcade Fires popularity, and you're not the first to do so. I wasn't there, but the consensus seems to be that they got significantly below average crowds for their headline slots at Reading and Leeds last year. So I'm not sure why you think they'd be too big to play a field 3 times larger 1 slot earlier. I'd say their popularity is broadly in line with some of the bigger drawing acts that have played that slot in previous years - Kasabian in 2009, New Order in 2005, Morrisey in 2004, Faithless in 2002, probably others. pinback
As people, from what has been said here and elsewhere, they are great. Unfortunately many find their music grates. Along side James Blunt! Ok to start with, but over exposure and over playing has made people sick of them! I personally just don't get what the fuss is about. I find their music a little to reminiscent of the mid-late 80's studio excess, It's a little too over produced, a little too slick, a little lacking in spark, it just does not move me either way it is just there! Yet I love Muse! Who I freely admit can have exactly the same complaints made about them! As to the haters, there are other stages at this festival, lets quit the whinge-jitsu demonstration. Teddington
Hardly a surprise. Think about it from a festival point of view. They do not want an empty Pyramid stage on a Saturday. Nice safe booking that most people will say "whatever" but probably turn up anyway. Personally I will be looking for something a bit more "Rocky" on the Other stage. dirk4danger
I saw them live at TITP in about 2002 and when they played Glasto (possibly) the year after. I admit that they were surprisingly good. However, they've not had a decent original song out since then, and their back catalogue is not big enough to justify them playing on the back of it. It's a poor choice of headliner and owes more to Chris Martin being chummy with the Eavis than anything else. Which is not the way I want my money spent! scappaflow
Do you need Mainstream appeal to Headline the Pyramid Stage? Yes. Do Coldplay have Mainstream appeal? Yes. Are Gorillaz a more interesting band than Coldplay? Yes. Did they have enough Mainstream appeal to Headline the Pyramid Stage? No!
incident
Arcade Fire are doing a headline gig at Hyde Park. Isnt that a sign of their popularity? You use the reading crowd as a measure of their popularity. They were never going to be that popular with the reading lot, they were an odd choice for that festival. Radiohead got a small crowd at reading the other year too. They packed out the other stage field a couple of years ago.
Toilet Duck
I keep banging on about it, but their last album is quite different in this respect. It contains mostly upbeat tracks with a touch of Arcade Fire about them.

russycarps
Yeah but they've won Brit awards now so surely everybody hates them as of today - they're just the new KOL!!!

MEGABOWL
To be fair though, that was a calculated move by Coldplay...they specifically brought in Arcade Fire's producer to create that sound (and they really wanted a "wake up" style song that the crowd could wail away to...hey presto, the title track) ...having said that, I do agree that it's their best effort since rush of blood to the head... BlackHole2006
Watching clips of there 2002 performance and I must say I'm mightilly impressed. Also like the fact that they gave all the money that they got payed for their 2005 performance to Oxfam. My mate is a massive fan so I'll probably end up watching them. I can imagine that it would be really euphoric if you watched them whilst slightly pissed so that's exactly what I'm going to do.
Redwinevino
Coldplay - really want to be there, gave their entire fee to charity. I'm no real fan of their music but they're on the "good people list". Haven't seen them since their headline in 2002 so, unless there's a horrible clash I'll see them. jimmyt
How were Arcade Fire poor to begin with? Funeral is a f**king brilliant album. Kings Of Leon wern't that bad when they started either. Aha shake and their debut were class album. It's just they went lazy when the words mainstream slapped them in the face. Arcade Fire have not done this yet.

glastouser
i dont like to just but in and go off topic but i totally forgot about having ever registered for efest.. been a lurker for years not missin (or ever intending to) glasto since i first went in '03........ so its probably about time to put my 2 penneth worth in! i just would like to say coldplay is a massive booking and i will look forward to it..... i missed them in '05... probably floating around the dance tent somewhere! and regretted it since. The lineup is shapin up to be good... maybe i dont agree with things but my opinion is nothing in amongst 130k. after all as i seem to read on here is is a music festival not an indie festival. and as emily herself said they are trying to make it as diverse as possible which is definately what they are achieving on a massive scale! i look forward to it from the day i leave the last festival... im sure this year will be as good as all the others...... sorry for butting in haha im sure it may upset some1
