I've a felling I'm one of the spunds....

I don't think I've said much 'against' the Olympics. I think I'm just confused as to why it's suuuuch a big thing. As I said, already they're talking about implementing changes to the education system, because of a 2 week sport festival..??

If there was one mother of all music and arts festivals, which happened every 4 years where all the best bands and artists in the world came together over 2 weeks and millions of people attended, and this year it was in London, and the world watched while we did a fantastic job of putting it on and everybody was happy and smiling then there would probably be less moaners on this board.

Then the government said, you know what, we should increase the hours of compulsory music and art in our schools, do you think people on here would be moaning as much.

no, neither do I

Its because its sport as to why its causing all the grumps round here

I disagree, I think the paralympics will also be a huge success and people will really get behind the tournament. In the past they had to give the tickets behind and they are now like gold dust. Its not going to be the same extent as the olympics but I think the country will embrace the event like no other has before.

Reminds me of that video about the failings of our educational institutions about how we're educated to compete which yields results (for some) when really collaboration would be beneficial to far more of us. It's at that point the pitch forks come out and I get accused of being a Communist for merely stating a theory which only makes me hope for Armageddon as all hope in humanity as a progressive species is crushed.

If that festival

- was several billion pounds over budget, at a time when people are dying in this country because they can't afford to live

- did very little to help the local area while supposedly "building a sporting legacy"

- had a negative effect on tourism to the centre of the capital

- stopped local businesses from being able to use the Olympics as a building point through it's draconian marketing laws

- built a massive venue which it promised would have it's future sorted before the event happened but didn't

- prevented thousands of fans getting tickets while giving them to corporate people who didn't turn up

- subcontracted a firm who has an awful track record, who then failed to provide the level of security agreed

- had 150 cyclists arrested for taking part in a cycling safety demonstration, including children, while supposedly "backing cycling safety"

I think people would be.

As I said, overall it did very well and was much better than I thought it would. However, there were failings, and things can't be ignored.

It is a daily mail-esque myth that schools do not undertake competitive sport. Until the coalition govt arrived there were also local school sport partnerships promoting sport and inter-school competition. But they scrapped them. Have any of the media picked up on that yet? Because outside of the teaching forums I'm on I'm yet to see people going "Hold up Dave, didn't we already do all this 3 years ago? And didn't you tell us then it wasn't worth spending money on?" It's a farce.

Apparently the cost of the Olympics was about £300 each...

I paid £315 to go to Silverstone... £5k to go to the World Cup...

I reckon £300 was a bargin....

we you would do. You had your tickets subsidised by others. You know, others who are now losing benefits that the Olympics money could have paid for.

Seeing as you're such an arch capitalist, will you be paying it back? As ever, the capitalists only object to socialism for others benefit, but not their own.

nope. Sport can be done for nothing.

We've just shelled out over £10Bn for sport that can be done for nothing.

Education can't be done for nothing. But the govt are having a good go all the same, because the money that might have been used to pay for it has been spunked on some sport.

Meanwhile, the govt have now changed the rules so that it's harder for sport to be done for nothing.

It's win/win.

Thats a load of bollocks... We borrowed the money of China... We don't have any money...

where ever the money came from doesn't matter.

The money is available. The UK decided - with your approval, from you current posts - it's best used being pissed against the wall.

And I see that you ignored the bit about paying back the money you've taken from others for your few days out. Thanks for proving the point.
