They wheel him out now to close out any old shite. Live AID, Concert for NYC, Live8, Olympics. Where were Townshend, Weller, Mick and Keef, Madness, Jimmy Page, Ray Davies etc etc? Its like "Oh lets just get Macca to do Hey Jude".

And I love Macca. One of the greatest ever humans. Minor criticism though. It was a stunning opening ceremony.

Went to watch the football at Manchester today, before the game I wasnt convinced by football as an olympuc game but have now been converted. The atmosphere was amazing and it was great to watch 2 games without the stress of supporting a side. I also felt as there was a large amount of neutrals there was far less negativity and hatred compared to a normal game. The crowd was pro brazil but that didnt mean they were anti the oppostion.

I wasnt expecting much from New Zealand V Egypt but it was a great end to end game, Egypt were technically superb but terrible in front of goal. NZ were like a lower league English side and effort made up for a lack of talent.

No problems with talent from Brazil, Neymar and Oscar were both amazing and destined to do big things in the game..

Went to the Canoe Slalom at Lee Valley yesterday - was really impressed - great facility and amazing to see it live. I can understand the need for banning liquids, and was good they had water points for filling up bottles, but the queues were horrendous - why didn't they tell people that the toilit basins had main water too! Walked in a filled up in 1min, as opposed to the 30min queue!

Opening ceremony was fantastic - was really good to see all the papers and media get behind it as well.

Just read this article about other countries reactions to the Olympics opening ceremony and saw a few of these quotes...

"OpeningCeremony segment supposedly showing the people who built modern Britain. But I don't see many immigrants. OK Britain, we see you flaunting your history. Where's the bit in which you invade, loot, kill and plunder?"

"Watching these open ceremonies, fairly confident that China will bury the west."

"Other countries show off their national costume, a few local dances. The English boast by being excessively self-deprecating. Awesome."

I think its a great achievement for Phelps but that doesnt necesarily make him the greatest olympian of all time. Its much easier to accumulate gold medals in some events compared to others because there are far more events you can compete in. A boxer for example could never accumulate medals because they can only enter 1 competion per olympic.

Im not normally am equestrian fan but found it enthralling today. Felt gutted for the swedish girl who missed gold on the last fence. Funny comment on the radio though with the commentator saying the sport is the most inclusive in the olympics because it allows male and female, old and young. How about rich and poor!!

The rich and poor is a great misconception about equestrian.

I used to go to a lot of 3 day events( dressage, show jumping, cross country) in my younger day as my mom and dad were county organisers for the red cross.

I can tell you equestrian is a cross range of people, from the very rich to the less well of.

I can see what your saying, especially when you got redgrave getting golds in 5 olympics.

I like most olympic sports but dressage I just cant get!! I wouldnt argue that the poorer can participate in equestrian, however how many of the elite in this country havent come from a priviliged background, I suspect not many but wouldnt claim to be an expert. I know someone whos daughter has competed at Burleigh and he is probably only a mid earner, however he says to reach the top and get the best horses/facilities you need decent money behind you.

Its very subjective in terms of the greatest olympian, what may count against redgrave is the fact that a large proportion of the world have probably never rowed before which probably impacts on the depth of competition. I would go for Carl Lewis on the basis of multiple medals at both track and field at multuple games but also I think the competition is greater. I have no doubt that many great potential sailors, horse riders and fencers are lost to the sport by never recieving the opportunity to do it, but think this is less likely (but not impossible) in sprinting.
