Owch...so do I, as I have bought tickets for LS @Barbican! Shame we had to miss the bandstand busking, I would have liked to see Jessica Hoop, at least I think she was playing?

I am eargerly awaiting the new Danny & The Champions of the World album, out nxt monday.... I wish that they were playing EoTR, would love to hear "Henry The Van" with a singalong...."Yes This Is The End of The Road!"

Am I the only person in the whole wide world who found this desperately disappointing ? I admit I haven't listened to it much (though I did see them tour it as well) but I find it low-key, repetitive and unmemorable, with very ordinary melodies and arrangements. The lyrics are good however, as expected. If it's going to be a "grower", it's growing very slowly... It might grow faster if I could enthuse myself into trying it more often, I suppose.

Back on topic!

I am currently enjoying my second listen of Beirut's new record, The Rip Tide (yes, I know, I know...I will atone for my sins with proper money on its release in August).

Now, I am a bit of a fan of course, but first impressions are that it's pretty jolly good! More poppy than the first two LPs, I would say that those finding Beirut a bit same-y will probably find more in here to enjoy. There is less of the heavily uke-led sound, though Zach still has a good old strum. Brass is still up front, of course, with Beirut's trademark twin-trumpet signature.

For fans this is likely to please. For newbies this may well hit home very nicely. For disbelievers there is enough here, particularly with an upbeat pop approach, perhaps to tempt them to check out that EOTR headline set after all...

Juat a follow-up to my previous post regarding The Rip Tide, the new Beirut album. I am gradually coming to the firm conclusion that it is their most consistent collection and therefore probably their best. There is much to love on the other two albums, but both contain a track or two that is just a little too repetitive/directionless in construction, despite the lovely trademark Beirut sound - i.e. the sort of track that switch people off from Beirut.

The Rip Tide seems to be free of these somewhat filler tracks. I'm not sure there's a weak track on the record. It's really, really lovely.

While I'm here, I am trying again to find the love for Timber Timbre's 'Creep on Creepin' On'. I might be getting a little bit closer, but it's taking a while. Still pretty convinced that it's not gonna happen for The Walkmen though...

BTW - where IS everyone. Are you all at Latitude, you multi-festivalists, you? If so I hope you're having a fab, if somewhat soggy, time :)

Latitude is so last year!

Looks like it might be a bit soggy this morn, but hope that they are having a great time too.

Anyway Ben I do not get your lack of enthusiasm for the Walkmen, its not an album of the year, but I am looking forward to seeing them. Glad that I am not alone tho in the Timber Timbre struggle, and I may be convinced to listen to Beirut having heard a couple of tracks.

Danny is in the post, it might even arrive this morning, complete with signed poster and bonus cd, so watch this space.

ps...re the ticket threads even I hadn't realised until the email from EoTR that it is a condition of the ticket sale that they must be exchanged thru the "official" ticket exchange. Am also disappointed that people have already been ripped off by scams.

PPS It arrived, 8.10am! Like it a lot. Yes 1972 Nick Lowe, Brinsley Schwartzish.... a signed poster of Danny for my wall!

the new album by timber timbre lacks the cathy guitar hooks from the first one, which was in my opinion a lot better. still looking forward to seeing them, but can somehow understand they are not for everyone. :) same can be said about the new woods-album, which doesn't quite live up to my hopes, but still one of my favorite bands of this years EOTR to look forward to.
