Well I have to confess I'm slightly disappointed because there's no-one that I like but there's plenty to investigate!!!

Mogwai are, for me, like Explosions in the Sky, I know I'll never be a fan but suspect the live experience will be great.

Damn.....went ahead with the listening......

Unfortunately there's a fabulous band from New York called The Staves whom I was getting all excited about till I checked a bit more carefully........they are not playing!!!!

The one playing is three sisters who, ummm, seem quite nice, but a bit high on sugary-nice harmonies and cliches and a bit low on reasons to stay awake.

Oh dear, another disppointing announcement after much (warranted or warranted) speculation about The National, The Decemberists et al. First, I was Beiruted in the back, now I'm Mogwai'd on the chin. I can see myself spending the festival in front of the piano stage with a line of glasses of cider, trying to blot out a drab cod balkan drone, waiting for something to turn up. ;-)

They have DJs playing one of the smaller stages till about 3am or so. Usually Jarvis Cocker and Richard Hawley. There's a secret disco stage in the woods as well. And the Tipi stage (small tent) has surprise late-night shows (e.g. impromptu sets from bands that played the main stage, jams etc) that go on till...I don't know, 2am? Anyone?

Sorry to see so many a wee bit underwhelmed with today. Obviously this post-rock fanboy is pretty pleased with the headline announcement. I would encourage those who have never taken much time to get into the genre to give Mogwai some quality time. Many of the people that I know who love EoTR enjoy music that triggers emotion, rather than just 'sounds quite nice'. For me, GOOD post-rock (and that means by no means all - much of it is formulaic and lacking in melody and song development) has really become the sound that moves me most over recent years. And this is from someone who LOVES vocals, LOVES singing, was the singer in the band, prided (prides) himself on knowing ALL the lyrics to bands he loved so he could sing along word-perfect at high volume. For me, that singing was an integral part of my experience with the live music I loved.

Well, I can honestly say that, when it's GOOD stuff, I get the same thrill from instrumental, lyric-free post-rock. That was brought home when I realised my deep love for Sigur Ros. With them, I don't understand a word and 'lyrics' are simply additional musical lines; another instrument if you will.

So give Mogwai a go. You might surprise yourself. The latest record 'Hardcore will never die, but you will', is a good introduction and a 'return to form' after the somewhat mixed reviews for their preceding LP. I'm not previously a hugely familiar fan but now am absolutely stoked at the idea of getting to know them so well over the summer before that final pay-off on Saturday night at EOTR. Some festival mid-point that's going to be!

I have actually seen Mogwai live. I saw them at the Slint ATP several years ago and I they were one of the more enjoyable bands of the weekend. I also liked a song that accompanied an EOTR video (This one, I'm in it during Stagecoach), "Fears Satan" or something. Although I listened to it again during the week and was less impressed.

Anyway, I'm waffling, I REALLY like Sigur Ros, have done ever since I saw them supporting GYBE at the Royal Festival Hall all those years ago, but as a general ruling post-rock just tires me out. Probably because of the lack of vocals.

Mogwai headlining just means I'll get the opportunity to check someone else out on one of the other 3 stages.
