Cheap Festival Phone?

For the past four to five years I've had various trusty Nokia's which when it gets to festival time I ordered a couple of cheap spare batteries, charged them up before heading down there and used to just swap them as and when needed. Thus avoiding the hellish experience of missing out on things while you stand in the charging tent waiting for the right bloody charger for your phone to come free,

This year however, I've succumbed to iPhone and it's ridiculously short battery life and unswappable battery....

So I wanted to know if people had any suggestions for either-

a - Additional power for the iPhone. Anyone have any experience of these extra power packs you plug into it? Preferably not wanting to get one of those wind up / solar efforts - from experience they never seem to work and it takes an age to realise they aren't working!

b - A cheap basic model phone that you can switch your SIM into and not have to worry about charging all festival?

I've just seen this one announced by Nokia that has 61 days(!!!) standby battery life - for £30- but it's not due out til the end of April- and knowing how these things slip / can become unavailable I'm worried I might not be able to get my hands on one in time.

So any suggestions/ experience of cheapo phones?

Freeloader Classic. I have bought the extra power pack too. Cheap off eBay & comes with connections to charge your friends phones. I charge my iPod (I take & boom box + itrip) at night when not in use, same would apply for your phone. There is also Powermonkey. Just remember to five it a pre-charge it before hand.

Alternatively something like this. Can still carry the phone around with you & can be kept in a pocket for emergancies.

Cheers mate

Freeloader looks a good idea- is dearer than a cheap phone though!

The portable charger looks good for the price but obv not rechargable...

Will have to make sure I keep my phone off as much as possible... That's if it's even wise to take an expensive phone to a festival!

I got one off eBay for a tenner. In fact I got about 5 & gave a couple to my mates for bday presents before festival season started. I managed to charge my iPod twice over at Reading last year & didn't even need to top it up using the solar panels. Might not quite do that for an iPhone though as it probably has a higher drain battery but wouldn't be far off.

I use my Sony K800i at festivals as its easy to text with when pissed, cheap off eBay (inc spare batteries), good 3.2mp camera with autofocus & got one of these Energizer things to go with it. You can get AA batteries at pretty much any festival now & as long as you get a decent set of Alkaline batteries & not Zinc ones it'll go all festival with heavy use off a 4 pack.

Also I have one of these Energizer things that charges my iPod via AA battery. The newer ones also do iPhones. Might be your best bet & you can get all of these off eBay!

I read a similar thread on here about a year back, where someone said that they'd just brought a fully charged car battery wired up to a cigarette lighter socket. Everyone in their group used it and it easily lasted all festival. Sounds a bit extreme, I know, but if you were to go for a motorbike battery instead, it would be a lot more portable. You can probably get an old battery from a scrapyard for a couple of quid. If it means your whole group can charge your posh phones all festival, then it would be worth the effort. I love having a smart phone with me at festivals: it does everything from MP3s and Worthy FM when you fall into bed to searching the internet to find out where and when the secret sets are on.

Just make sure you get a sealed unit so you don't end up with battery acid swilling round in your rucksack, and take it home with you after.

A few of us bought Ted Baker 'Proporta' chargers last year. I get 2 full chargers from it for my HTC Wildfire and it will also recharge my ipod and my Pure DAB radio so cuts down on carting a load of other chargers when on my travels!

Nokia 1800/1616.

I've had an 1800 for work for the last 6 months. It's left permanently on, it gets charged once a week and I don't think it's ever dropped below 3 bars on the battery life. Only used for maybe a dozen calls/texts a day though.
