Cheap Festival Phone?

Get a big pack of AA batteries (e.g. from poundland) and one of these:

Yes that's right it's a quid, delivered to your door. These things are so cheap there is no excuse for anyone wasting time at the recharge tent. However, lots of people still don't have one -- including my friends! Don't get ripped off paying a fiver for the same thing at the festy.

Before you go to bed, switch off your phone and attach the charger to it. Wake up to a freshly charged phone every day! B)

Notice how it includes 4 different charging leads (I believe one is a MicroUSB which virtually all phones can charge from). If you want to spend a few pennies more, you can get one with a USB A-female type connector, which means you can plug your phone's USB lead into it (i.e. it will charge any phone which can be charged through its USB connection - that's pretty much anything from the last 10 years).

This year I've bought a load of them and I'm going to give all my friends one and tell them to recharge their phones whenever they're back at the tent. After all, it is pointless (and infuriating  ) having a fully charged phone if the people you are trying to call have no battery on theirs!

Now, granted because they run off a single AA battery, they won't give you as much charge as the 2*AA type. But they will still provide a good amount of charge to a smart phone. If you are really bothered then use higher capacity batteries (e.g. a 4 pack of 2500mAh NiMH AAs will give you oodles of power).

I like the look of the new Nokia X1-00 , should be out this month and is a perfect Festival phone. Doesn't have a camera or internet but has a huge, very loud speaker for playing music, Amazing battery 61 days standby with 13 hours talktime on one charge and a built in Torch to find your tent !

should be around 35-£40 but cant see any for sale at the moment..

I have a couple of old Sony Ericsson phones which I have bought a couple of spare batteries for. I had loads of battery life last year and think I only used two batteries over the weekend, with one to spare.

Myself and GF use these and keep our 'decent' phones at home.

imo you'd be off your nut to take your primary phone into a festival, even assuming you have spare batteries for it given that you are living outside for 5 days and there is a reasonable chance of being in rain and mud, why take the risk when it will not cost much to have an alternative arrangement?

And any iphone users who take their phone to a festival are just crazy. Not withstanding the joke of a battery life, why take the risk with such a costly piece of kit that will be next to useless after a day.

I don't think the AA battery route is the best route -- moving the charge from the AA battery to your phone is inefficient and inconvenient.

You can buy phone batteries very cheaply on eBay etc. -- e.g. a Nokia 6210 battery is £2.50. I bought three made sure they were all fully charged before I left home, and just swapped batteries when my phone died. Easily lasted the weekend.

It's definitely worth taking a cheap non-smart phone - less of a problem if you lose it, battery lasts longer. You don't need email/web etc. on site, and anyway the service will be congested.

Last year I bought a basic Nokia from Carphone Warehouse for a Fiver, as did all my friends. They were fab! Great battery life (as they don't do anything fancy!), and really not a bother if you lose it. In fact, I did lose it, but as it only had a temporary sim card in it with very few numbers on, it didn't matter at all. So this year, I've just bought a replacement for £3.00. Yes you have to pay for £10.00 worth of credit too, but you'd need that anyway! Can't go wrong with a brand new phone for £3 I reckon!!

Here's the page in case anyone cares;

I need a cheap Orange PAYG phone for festivals but I don't want one that you have to put credit on when you buy as I already have a PAYG sim with credit on it. Is there anywhere I can buy one new or is a second hand one my best bet?

i bought two of these phones for me and my wife this year, you have to buy a £10 topup with the phone BUT a phone for a penny in my book is a bloody good deal!!!

gave the phones a quick charge and over a week later they had only lost one bar of battery life

if you need a cheap phone for glasto, i would highly recommend this. and the delivery is mega quick, i ordered mine on a sunday lunchtime and the damn thing turned up the next morning!

edit.....just noticed somebody else has posted about this phone above!
