pehaw
Don't write your laptop off just yet. How old is it? Which version of Windows is it running? How much ram? Disk size? Free disk space? Processor?
Paul ™
Definately do a full OS reinstall before admitting defeat, and something loose inside? Could just be a loose screw/fan etc, easy to fix
Bisque
If its a no-goer, Sony's imo are the best. You'll struggle to get one for less than £500 though. Great build quality, battery life is good & you can feel a bit of a snob when you pull it out in front of your mates. Hewlett Packard seem to be the next popular make from what all my friends have at uni. They aren't computer nerds but they know their stuff & all agreed if they could afford it they would have got a Vaio but their HP does exactly the same job for less. Personally I have a MacBook Pro 13inch. Really love the smaller size.
Jackmypie
Dell Inspiron 15 are the best ! They are so cheap (around £300-350) and are really fast. My one has 4GB ram, Dual Pent Procecer and a shitload load of memory.
minute5072
If you have a comet or currys near you it might be worth seeing if they have good deals on ex-display laptops. Can usually pick up a bargain

ampersand
thanks for all the help. hard browsing on just phone though. reinstalled windows 7 and same problems. takes 3 clicks with patience before ie opens all at once. and its not even letting me browse the c drive without having a stroke! definitely need a visit to pc world at lunch tomorrow. that toshiba looks decent. smaller screen than my 17 inch but no biggy. battery life not important either. its rarely unplugged and never taken out of a house. ill ask about ex display models

Greeny_Musicchild
iFixit. Get yourself learned. Taking a laptop apart is easy and throughout your life I'm sure it's a skill you'll come to use a lot. Especially if you're only ever going to spend a maximum of £300 on laptops or buy ex-display models. If you have to go to PC World don't buy anything branded Advent (or any other of their own brand shit). I think you're pushing the boundaries of lasting laptops for that kind of price, maybe get a netbook? The Acer 1 is pretty cool.

The Nal
Stay away from Celeron processors. All "home" laptops are basically the same to be honest except the odd HDMI or USB port here and there, unless you go for one of the higher spec gaming ones with the beast graphics cards. Just make sure it has at least 2GB RAM and an Intel Core 2 or iCore processor in it. Or a good AMD processor. Jackmypie
I've gone through 2 acers now and can definitely say they are the worst. They are so poorly put together, my keys kept falling off and one of them kept over heating too. Also they are slow as shizz.

The Nal
having a look now. was on dell's earlier but the site was slow as anything on works computer. and realised that most of them don't even come with a dvd drive? which is an essential for me. actually, i have an external one somewhere but too much of a pain to have out constantly. chappiepunk
Website is always slow yeah. They all come with a dvd r/w though. theres an Inspiron 15R knocking about with 4GB RAM and a Pentium Dual Core (not ideal but should be fine) for about £380. Or, have a look at the Dell outlet store. Laptops that were refused on delivery by customers. All fully refurbished and have warranty etc. This one here is a steal. The Nal
Is there any risk getting one from this outlet store? Edited March 17, 2011 by The Nal
