Original headliners

Really really don't want to get another MCR argument started but it's soooo hard to resist. An album going Gold isn't really much of an achievement though is it. Beady Eye, All American Rejects, Fall Out Boy, Lostprophets and The View have had platinum selling albums. I still consider Danger Days a flop. If you don't want to go that far, then you have to at least agree that it isn't the kind of album success that propels a band into headline status.

Muse and The Strokes were probably first choices, Muse are a massive band who haven't played R&L for five years while The Strokes haven't played in a long time, are back with a new album and have been talked about in terms of headlining for a while (Iam Camfied said on XFM back in September/October that it looked like they'd be headlining). Not sure about MCR, although as they were hinted to be headlining/subbing last year I wouldn't be surprised if they've been lined up for a while. If their album had have gone stratospheric and loved by all it would be being hailed as a great move like Arcade Fire was.

Apart from the Foo Fighters though which bands that are headlining other festivals would be genuine contenders? Kasabian and SOAD maybe but probably be having the same "are they big enough" arguments about them. All the other headliners on the circuit this Summer have either played R&L in the last five years, definitely aren't big enough or definitely aren't suitable.

I'm sure he had other bands on the phone but he probably has open offers to more than three bands at any time, it won't be like he had three and couldn't get them so pulled out the three that we have, and I'm sure some of them would have been ruled out even before last years festival.

If they book MCR I want someone kicking to be on another stage when they are on.

So they can witness the 3 emo kids collecting cups and a tumbleweed making up the crowd in front and realise they are terrible.

MCR are one of the biggest names in music. Even my dad has heard of them. In this day and age they have had very decent album sales also. They have headlined festivals before and done it succesfully. Despite being bottled at Download from what I could tell they brought in a lot of fans who wouldn't have been at the festival otherwise and to those fans they went down really well. The videos of them headlining Summer Sonic are incredible etc. Plus everyone talks about them ot headlining at T in the park but that is hardly their audience and they look to be playing a bigger slot there than they did on the back of the Black Parade... This is probably not the best worded argument for them to headline but they are hardly the weakest headliner ever... they are a fair bit bigger than Arcade Fire were before Reading and they were one of the best headliners Reading has has in ages.

I remember last year loads of people were somehow convinced that Blink 182 wouldn't be headlining due to them not being big enough. Look how that crowd turned out.

I'm not really a fan of MCR but I think they will pull off a headline set quite well. They've got a lot of theatrics and enough hits to pull in a casual listener. (Presuming there is no-one amazing on the other stages)

Blink 182 are huge though (or they were back in the day), going since 1992, people still listen to them. And especially as they reformed, people went crazy for tickets round here.

MCR had one big hit with "I'm not ok" for a couple of weeks, years ago, I don't know anyone who still listens to them.

I've got their album in the Rack still and every time I go past it I think "Shit album"

which just gets to show that the problem is your perception, and not MCR's popularity.

MCR have just won 'best album' in the NME Awards - awards that are voted for by fans. Which gets to show that they'ree far more popular than you're thinking.

Mind you, ther5e is a reverse to that - they also won 'worst album'.

Oh they did black parade? Yeah that was awful, just awful.

I swear the only person who bought it was my 12 year old cousin, and he likes susan boyle so really how good is his taste in music?

I listen to Radio 1 at work and MCR are all over it, there new material is getting alot of airplay and same with the last album. They're alot more popular trhan alot of people think.

IMO, I think they'll nail there headline slot, they probably feel like they've a point to prove.
