I can't really believe that so many music fans have not heard of the national.

great, great band which will pull off 3rd with absolute ease.

i also can't believe someone mentioned magnetic man as an alternative. are you 15 or just deaf? give them more than 30 seconds of your time or maybe wait 10 years and then listen to them. you probably find the beatles, david bowie and bob dylan boring too. right......i'm going to listen to some dubstep in my bedroom.

LOL. I wish I was 15.

I love the way everybody is gunning me because I criticised a band that barely anybody has heard of. It's not so much the fact that they are playing, it's the fact that they are sub-headliners on the main stage that's the joke. I appreciate that some people like this sort of re-hashed, outdated, morose British indie. Unfrotunately for Festival Republic, the majority of Reading goers don't and that's why it's nearly June and tickets are still on sale.

I scratch my head at the idea that you think it's silly for me to suggest that MM could be third on the bill, yet this band is a great choice. Somebody even said The National could be headliners. LOL. Really!? I don't think so. Although having said that I wouldn't put it past Melvin Benn.

If you think MM are shit, I'm sure you can turn up on the main stage at Bestival and tell all their fans, but you'll probably be too busy getting a Geek Pie somewhere in Shoreditch hey.

I suppose we'll just have to see what the crowd is like on the day. I imagine it will be poor.

I'm going to download the album and see what you're all getting your knickers in a twist about. If they're as a 'good' as Elbow then I'll be predictably dissapointed.

Like I said, whether indie fans think they're good or not doesn't really matter. What matters is their position on the bill, along side the likes of Elbow, which is ridiculously high for Reading festival's main stage. Especially on the Sunday. Hence why tickets haven't sold out.

I'm not saying MM would be a great choice for that position, I'm just saying they'd be much more appetite for them. See Bestival. I think the likes of Rancid would've been a much more appropriate choice. Of course MM are going to have less Last.fm listens, they've only been on the go since last year!

I digress, but lets just wait and see who's right. ;-)

I think 5 guys out of Ohio would be pretty confused to hear they were playing "British indie" but anyways....

They just pulled the 2nd largest crowd of the weekend at Primavera. Only Pulp got more. As festival sets go it was a lot better than I thought it would be I.e not too High Violet heavy. Opened with Start A War which was nice. Abel and Mr November were fierce and surprisingly for a festival finished with About Today. Not their finest hour (Matt could probably have done with having had one less sangria before show time) but loads of energy and everyone seemed to love them. Still looking forward to the warm up dates more not least because they've been dusting down some great rarities like patterns of fairytales, Santa Clara and driver surprise me. Can't wait!

I doubt very much that there would be more appertite to see MM, The National had one of the albums of last year (as voted by various publications), havene't been at Reading for a while (if ever, apparently they played 2005 but I can't find them on the bill), got great reviews from Glastonbury last year, won't be around for two of three years after this Summer (the reason Melvin Benn gave putting them high up on the bills at R&L and Latitude) and I also think they may have been nominated for a Brit. They also sold out three nights at Brixton at the end of last year so have a fairly substantial fanbase to build on.

Of course none of that proves that they're good, but I think it shows that there's a significant buzz around them to think that they'll get a decent crowd at R&L. Maybe not as much as other bands in that position like The Offspring or Weezer (or possibly even Madness depending on how the R&L crowd appeal to them) but there will be a lot of interest in them, especially on a day when The Strokes and Pulp are playing.

I decided to give The National a try after a few people told me they would be my kind of band, so I got High Violet a few weeks ago. Been listening to it on and off since then and it's still not really grabbed me :-/

Is that album pretty indicative of their sound, or are there some stand-out tracks from previous albums that I should check out before disregarding them altogether?
