Yes because even though they're an older band they're still somewhat relevant to a younger audience, whether it's through their music ageing well, the size they got to ensuring that they're well known or Damon/Graham's more recent stuff with other bands or as a solo artist.

It varies, I think last year he found out very early from a reliable source so was happy to run with it.

I dare say he's heard stuff about this year's headliners but just isn't confident enough that it's correct to release it.

What time of year is it that we usually start hearing official rumours from Neil?

I looked up the article where he said it was gonna be Arcade Fire, Blink 182 and MCR for 2010 and that was March 1st, but I'm sure we knew the headliners (including Pulp) way earlier last year?

it depends entirely on what I hear, from whom, and when.

For 2010 I had AF and Blink a long time before that article .... and that article makes clear that MCR wasn't anything I had the same certainty with as I did the other two.

For 2011 I had the three headliners from two different sources before xmas. One of those sources was a regular, while the other wasn't but because of some of what he'd said I was able to have a decent amount of trust in what he was telling me.

Some years I get nothing at all for some fests. It all depends on what word comes my way.

If you were to put your money on 3 headliners for this year who would they be, gut instinct?

I'm sliding towards Foo Fighters, Bloc Party and Jay Z

Foo Fighters, Jay-Z (perhaps with Kanye) .... and someone much newer - take your pick, there's no one blindingly obvious except perhaps for screeching Flo (tho she's more V than R/L).

They're guesses, nowt more.

i reckon JAY Z/ FOO FIGHTERS/ SOAD would be sweet.

it might be sweet, but I have trouble agreeing with it perhaps being that.

As I've said with some of the other suggestions, I'd say that it won't have three much older acts (as those are) as the headliners. Melvin will want to have something newer in there too I reckon, so there's at least a nod to 'new music' which is supposedly what the fest is about nowadays.

Then again, I could be completely wrong.

I really thought if R+L pulled a new headliner like MCR for this year it was going to be a big step up for Pendulum (after say proving themselves headliner worthy at GG/SW4/Bestival this year).

I know they aren't popular on here & some people would disagree but they are big enough to fill a R+L headlining slot imo. But they aren't touring.

I still feel that there will be one new(ish), one old & one inbetween acts that will headline. Just can't think of who would be big enough to do it, sell tickets & pull it off (& Mumford it ain't). Except maybe Dizzee? But he's not that new or new to headlining major fests. So Bloc Party, which I would be happy with, but too much of a risk selling tickets? Viva Brother? & if it was Mumford & Sons... imagine the boring Radio 2 crowd you'd get for whatever day they played, they wouldn't know what hit them walking into Reading.

Sorry about the rant, thinking out loud. Just want to know what peoples thoughts were of any newish bands that could realistically potentially headline, like the ones mentioned in my last post, as Neil thinks there may be a chance of a newish band playing at the top of the bill.

I've been following this forum for a little but haven't made an account until now, so how about this for top 3 each day:

Blur

Bloc Party

Editors

Jay-Z (Maybe Kanye as well)

Dizzee Rascal

Lostprophets

Foo Fighters

QOTSA

Bullet For My Valentine

And then NME Headliners maybe Florence, Chase & Status and KoRn (with Skrillex on before them)

Florence is probably too big to headline the tent and Korn probably not big enough. I don't think Lostprophets would play as high as third and QOTSA subbing three times in six years is a bit much. Rest is pretty good but I'm still not sure they'd have a rap/hip hop headliner and sub on the same night.
