Well, when I say a lot, I moreso mean the fact that Faith No More did similar but this time the upset wouldn't be near as bad as it'd not a headliner. Every reason i can see them playing Download, which yes they are. Then playing R&L possibly and waiting to see tickets sell out for that or well enough to announce a UK tour of their own maybe.

Prodigy, Bullet For My Valentine, Frank Turner, Billy Talent etc have all had mainstage slots at one fest and played the other without having to wait for a post-Download announcement. The only reason Faith No More wasn't announced was because they were headliners still doesn't point to them playing though.

None of them you mentioned above except for The Prodigy this year and Faith No More below have had a main stage headlining slot at another UK Fest, as far as I'm aware. Headlining 2d stage isn't really an issue either, that just means they could've been 3rd, 2nd at a push depending on fest on main.

Who said they are? I'm saying in a similar position where it was a surprise for Faith No More to play NME headline after heading at R&L.

Covering the spot of main head and main sub head, there's is a case that the same may well happen and also which I've not denied the case it may not happen that Soundgarden head NME or sub main.

Technically speaking, if they can sub Download, they can 3rd at R&L, but realistically speaking, if it wasn't for Sabbath, they'd be headlining.

:banghead: So what you're saying is irrelevant as the only reason it was a surprise to have Faith No More at R&L was becuase they were headliners at Download and so it's no different to all the other bands that get announced below the top spot and there's still nothing that points to them playing.

It's not so irrelevant. But know one expected it and no one would really expect to see Soundgarden do it but there is that small majority that will like it and don't want to see a main stage headliner.

And we know end of the day, if they hadn't got Black Sabbath, it'd be Soundgarden there, just like it will be if Sabbath have to pull so all is quite logical really.

I very much doubt Soundgarden will play. I just can't see them coming over twice to Europe for shows. For a start their members have other commitments and I'm not sure which other festivals would stump up the cash to make the trip worthwhile for them. For example some acts such as Blink 182 and 30stm play festivals such as Area 4 and Highland in Germany before playing Reading and these aren't going to pay big money to try to tempt Soundgarden to come over when they are already playing festivals in the country. Ie for Germany and Rock Am ring. If they were a huge band, yeah it would still be an option but Soundgarden aren't. I can't see promoters splashing the cash for an act that would have question marks over whether they could pull enough numbers in.

Another point. When Faith No More played Reading in 2009 there was talk that there was a contract with either of the festivals that if an act played the main stage at one, then they can't play the main stage at the other. I have no idea if this point is true but there hasn't been any act that has played main stage at both from the line ups I've seen. If this is the case then any Download act on the main will have to be in the NME stage at Reading. Which decreases Soundgarden's chances even smaller I'd say. It could just be a coincidence that point but I've always had it in my mind.
