That's because they've grown massively more popular with R&L crowd over the years. Phoenix didn't get a massive crowd when they played, and they've hardly got more popular, where as Maccabees have had hit records and are playing Alexandra Palace. R&L realise there's a very particular formula to make r&l sell, and by the looks of things they'll be sticking to it this year, as it's a vital year for the fest. Unfortunately that formula doesn't involve taking risks.

Do The Shins have an audience at R&L anymore? I doubt it. How are Primal Scream doing anything when they don't have a bassist?

I agree most of the predictions are similar, but that's because it's going to be a very predictable year. As I previously mentioned, FR will have seen how poorly last year sold, and the increase in V and the like, and will take as little risks as possible. Obviously you couldn't speak against a few acts like Madness but it'll hardly be shocks all round.

I dont think SOAD will play, the only reason why they are being talked about here is because somebody guessed Neils clue wrong! It was a very logical conclution that actually fitted the clue but in the end it was wrong!

Now all thats has done has put SOAD into peoples heads and everyone is getting excited by the thought!

Spent all day on this forum trying to work out that clue - for what its worth I was convinced it was coldplay for various reasons... but it was a good clue Neil!

Anyway, despite the fact its not very 'inspired' and its been obvious for ages, I am very happy with foos and I would've put them in my dream lineup. I was less keen on Kasabian when I first read that, however after listening to more of their stuff I am a bit more pleased with it - although I would still swap them with numerous others in an instant!

As for headliner number 3, Green Day would easily be my number one choice but thats unlikely (even if both Foos and GD were given 2hrs I just don't think FR would book arguably the two biggest R/L style bands in one year)

Judging by the other rumours that leaves us with (based on the bands most people seem to want AND/OR expect):

SOAD

Bloc Party

Cure

Jay-Z/Kanye

Slipknot

Rammstein

Blur

Killers

I think we can rule out Bloc Party as they won't sub and I can't see them headlining the same year as Kasabian. Blur I think we've all ruled out after what Neil said, Rammstein seem too 'inspired' for FR and I very much doubt it, Slipknot I also think won't headline - although there is a slight chance of subbing imo. The Cure I also think everyone has ruled out and that stupidly long debate came to nothing - try lattitude.

Now the 3 that most people think it will be one of: Jay-Z/Kanye I think is unlikely on many levels - partially the size of their setlist and partially because I don't think they appeal to a wide enough R/L audience - people who don't post on these forums (i.e. most people) have quite different ideas of what makes a good and bad headliner for R/L to those that do.

SOAD - there is little evidence (that I can see) that actually backs this up. Having said that, I do think it would be a wonderful move on Benn's part and - after Green Day - I would choose them out of the remaining rumours list. That also fits with what Andy Copping said and with the 'one year later so we can be exclusive' ethos I'm pretty sure Melvin has adapted.

After all that though, I'm fairly confidant it will be the Killers, and (please don't hate) I don't think it would be all that bad. Whatever people say on here, they will get a good-sized crowd (like 08) and songs like Mr. Brightside will be amazing to sing along to.

Also, I would love to see Biffy again and am very happy to wait for them to be potential headliners next year (probably with Blur another day which will be good). Kaiser Chiefs third also suggests good things as they're the sort of band I would usually expect Melvin to use as a lazy (but imo very decent) sub so expecting a good lineup outside the hedliners this year! Noel Gallagher I would also love to see (sounds pretty much guaranteed) along with Soundgarden, Tenacious D, Wombats, Weezer (2nd best after blink in 10) and please please Melvin book Sum 41!!!!!

Very true, but IMO RnL will never go that heavy because the currernt climate would mean they would be putting themselves up against Download and Sonisphere! Not a logical thing to do, a hardcore heavy or metal fan would consider the whole weekend and would hate the prospect of listening to Indie and Alt.

I think you will see that the third headliner will fit to the demographic of RnL has attracted over the past 3 years!

2008 Was the last year we had a heavyier line-up and this was the year Download had Lostprophets as a headliner! I think that year RnL really took the bullet to Download!

Since then Download has become a bigger force and I dont think Melvin would compete with them once again!

At the end of the day its all about selling tickets, yes SOAD would but would you see those fans coming back year after year, I dont think you would.
