I would love for the 3rd headliner to be The Killers.

Regular R/L attendants might think they are mundane or whatever, but the majority of the people that attend will not have been before, and certainly won't have seen The Killers perform.

I don't think that rebooking regular bands is such as bad thing, as I would say the target audience are teens / young adults, who don't neccessarily have a disposable income to go to a festival every year, never mind multiple festivals in 1 year.

Booking bands that are guaranteed to get a crowd and sell tickets (The Killers, KOL, Muse etc) would probably be a better choice overall than booking "original" bands such as The Cure. Maybe not to people that go every year, but for the majority of the audience.

It seems to me in this Cure debate, that most people are doubting their ability to headline on the basis that they don't know many/any of their songs.

  • They won god like genius at the NME in 2009.

  • They have headlined Glasto 3 times.

  • Read any review of their bestival set from last year, each one is glowing (I was there, it was amazing imo!).

  • In Europe this year they are considered big enough to headline festivals alongside Radiohead, The Stone Roses, Pearl Jam, The Chill Peppers and Bruce Springsteen

  • They were considered big enough to headline Coachella in 2009.

So ignoring record sales and the fact that they are held in high regard by many people (subject to opinion) If I was a young person who didn't know many/any of their songs I wouldn't be saying "They don't deserve to headline" or "they aren't the right band for reading". I'd probably be saying "Wow who are this band? I need to start listening to them".... and if after that I still didn't like them, I'd probably put it down to personal preference and still be able to accept that they are a headline band.

May not be what you want but there is no denying it makes sense as a booking, Kasabian and the Foos are about as mainstream as you can get in terms of rock bands, plenty of room to through in something a little more left field with some heritage ; ) young people who want the obvious bands will buy their tickets anyway....and maybe some of the people that wouldn't normally go will buy theirs. Win win for reading.

...but as is always the case with these things, that's just my opinion ; )

Will be interesting to see who does play the NME tent this year, for what its worth I will throw a few names into the hat to get it going-Janes addiction (maybe to make up for cancelling last year???) The Maccabees seems likely, how about 'The Kooks', TDCC (looked a bit out of place on the main stage in my opinion, think a tent would suit them better), Miles Kane (definitely deserves a push after last years awesome display), The Enemy (new album out this year).

Who else is going to throw some names in the pot???

I really can't see Enter Shikari being back for the 6th (?) time in a row this year and being bumped up to headline the tent. Obviously they're big enough to headline the tent just I think they'd need a break from R+L before FR decides to put them in a headline position.

Are Justice big enough to headline the NME stage? How about Foals?
